Subject: Best aerobars for basic roadbike?
I have an older (6 yrs) road bike, Jamis Quest. Nothing fancy, but it goes forward when I pedal. I used it for my first tri last month with no aerobars (averaged 17 mph or so). I am doing another Sprint in Austin on labor day and my main purchase to upgrade my bike (and hopefully my time) will be some clip-on aerobars. In training, my average speeds are getting to 18-19mph range now, and my goal is about 20mph ave for the race in 6 weeks.

Do I need to worry about clip-ons that are specific for road bike frames/geometry? Are some clip-ons only designed for tri-bike geometry? I don't want to buy something that won't fit correctly.

Any recommendations? My budget is up to $200 if necessary, but closer to $100 or so would be nicer. I've read most of the gear reviews and am leaning torward the Profile Design T1 or T1+ Viper.

Thanks!

i would venture to guess that clip on aero bars are not specific to non time trial/tri bikes because those typically come standard on those.

that being said, I added a pair of Forte T2 Aerobars to my road bike because I was on a bit of a budget and i'm not totally pulled in by brand name value (on most things, I still acknowledge when a brand makes a superior product).

I am very happy with my bars, easy to install, easy to adjust, easy on the wallet.  Take the money you saved and get some more sweet accesories for your road bike.

Thanks for the info! I found the Profile Design Airstrykes for 79 at TriZone, so not too bad and they're adjustable with flip-up armrests. I'll post a review once I've ridden them for a while.

I used the Airstykes on my old bike (which was around 17 years old, so don't tell me a six year old bike is old!).  I liked them a lot.  When I upgraded my bike, I switched to Syntace for the weight savings.  But it was convenient having the pads flip up to give you another spot on the handlebars to hold if you wanted to sit upright.
