Subject: Shoulder with no cartilage left
Last summer I was racing bmx and injured my shoulder. I did not have insurance at the time and continued to use it - bmxing and softball. When I got insurance I found out that it was dislocated and the cartilage was torn. I had surgey and my cartilage was in worse shape than the doctor first thought. After my 6 month check up I was told there was nothing else that can really be done to replace the cartilage.  Daily use of the shoulder seems fine but swimming kills it for days later. Besides icing and ibprofen is there anything else someone could recommend.

Thanks

I know how you feel, I am paralyzed and have had rotator cuff surgury on one shoulder and dislocation surgery on the other. YOu can always swim sidestroke that is what I do. I dont do it because of my shoulders but because I have 14 inch rods in my bad...We all hurt, if the docs say it is healed but going to hurt then its time to push through it.....also take gluccosamine

I have lost the cartilage in my left knee. I take glucosamine/chondroitin, wear a brace when it really aggrivates me, limit my running to 3 dpw (and never consecutively)... and, well...live with the pain. There really isn't much else TO do.

In your case, I'd suggest limiting the amount of swimming...and maybe consult a master's coach to see if there is a way to modify your stroke so you can still race, but put less effort into your shoulder?

Thanks for the input. The fact that it has healed as well as can be expected changes my mine set. I was hoping that the pain would subside over time but with no cartilage I guess that is not realistic. I will continue on with the glucosamine and look at new technics in the pool. Thanks again.
