I recently bought a new road bike. Its a Cannondale Synapse with aluminum frame and carbon forks and seat post. I was reading in my manual that racks where the bike hangs are not recommended. This is the type of rack that I have. Its hitched to my truck: http://www.yakima.com/racks/bike-racks/product/8002404/bighorn-(2-receivers-only).aspx

Why would this be a problem?

Thoughts?

Gary

No responses on this? It got to the 2nd page with no answer. That link doesn't work. Here is a picture of my type of bike rack. Why would this be a problem for aluminum bikes?

Many thousands of people are using this type of rack with a road bike frame. I don't see what the problem would be. You could always call Cannondale directly and inquire as to what they mean exactly by the statement.

I forget what the manual says specfically. I will check it when I get home. It does say "not recommended" for CD aluminums, and says specifically NOT to use them for CD carbon bikes (mine is not carbon).

The whole manual does go WAY overboard with CYA kind of stuff. On every page I am warned that I could be "seriously injured, paralyzed, or killed" if I don't follow these instructions.

I've lugged my aluminum bike around 1000+ miles if not double that on a "hanging rack" with no issues.  I don't think it's a problem.
