I have a 3mil wetsuit that zips in the back that I got for scuba diving.  is this along the lines of what people use?  (I understand some of the tri race wet suits are much faster in the water).  Is a regular wetsuit a bad idea??

Tri wetsuits are made to flex in the right place. The general consensus here is that non-tri wetsuits can be very tight around the shoulders, cause massive chafing, and are generally not fun.

The good news is you can get a wetsuit relatively inexpensively either here in the classifieds or when they go on sale.

triathlon wetsuits can also be rented for around $30/race.  I would not use a scuba suit....
