How does one become one? do you need a certain amount of quality finishes? what does it take to get the label?

That may be what your looking for. I am not sure if the elite status replaced the "pro" status or how that works. Just throwing in what I could find!

In my experience (nothing to do with triathlons) a Professional is someone who gets paid to do what they are a pro at (i.e. a professional triathlete makes a living at being a pro triathlete).  Elite triathletes are simply very competitive (elite) triathletes that compete regularly, may or may not be sponsored and may or may not be making any money at being a triathlete but are not "making a living" at it.

Just my perception.
