I got my clipless pedals last week and went on my second ride with them today.  Everything was going well until I stopped to check the trail map.  I was pushing my left foot down to clip in and apparently used a bit too much force because I lost my balance and fell, to the left where I was already clipped in of course.  Unfortunately what would  have simply been a minor embarrassment thanks to the 3 yr old who was pointing and laughing at me is worse because I threw my arm out to catch my fall.  Now I have pain from my wrist to elbow whenever I try to turn my arm.

I feel stupid because I know better than to fall like that and now I may miss my very first race due to this injury.  At least I'm pretty sure I won't be making that mistake again.

Don't worry I fall like that at least once a year and started riding with clipless pedals in '03. Hope you don't miss your race that would suck.

Congratulations on your first clipless fall : Strike 1 of 3. You have 2 more to go.

I did exactly the same but fell into a line of moving traffic from a right hand turn. Aside from the injury I think the shock of finding myself in foetal position in the path of a car put me out of action for 4 weeks. Take care of the arm and get back on them.

What people told me & I now do : Make sure you got the resistance on real-light so you can unclip easily. As part of the "slow down' unclip real-early, have a contingency plan in your head if you are not unclipping at a point where you may need to stop, and when you slow down - put the bike into a low gear so you can push away and pedal easy to get going - especially on any sort of gradient.

Clipless are great :-) it just hurts a bit :-)  When you get the hang of it and feel yourself pulling up and 'pedalling circles' its a sweet thing.

I did the EXACT same thing-TWICE!  It was in good company at my 100 mile ride a pit stop though and everyone was really nice and helpful!  It just takes some practice and will be come second nature soon enough...

ARM-hummm-I don't know what to say about that!  Thankfully I fell on my shoulder and just scraped it up pretty good.

The mistake I was referring to was trying to catch myself.

Turns out I fractured my radius at the elbow.  I'm out for the rest of the season without doing a single race.

Oh that sucks big time!

If it makes you feel any better - you are not alone. I didn't/am not doing a single race this year either, due to injury.
I have high hopes (and lots of training time) for 2010!

FrownOh no!  I am so sorry!  I've had two "clipless- issue" bad falls this year and actually bailed on the clips for my first race. Truly worried I was going to forget to unclip with all the excitement and get really hurt. I'd be interested to know how many people actually give up on clips becauseof the injury factor. I'm really sorry about your crash
