I thought I would post this just because I am one of you. I started swimming about a month ago in prep for my first tri on August 9th. I was just like you, having difficulty swimming more than one lap and felt like I was dying in doing so. I came here and saw all the advice of swim more and get lessons, but I felt so bad swimming I almost didn't want to go to the pool for practice.
I checked out Total Immersion swimming, got a few lessons, and kept going back to the pool and tonight, I just did my first open water swim. I swam 500-600 meters non stop in 20ish minutes, not sure of the exact distance because everyone said the course was between 250 and 300 meters. Not super speedy but acceptable in my opinion.
My point is, the advice of keep swimming it will get better, is really true. It will get better the more you are in the water and swimming. Don't give up.
Total Immersion is AMAZING. I've just been checking that out in the past few weeks and while my speed hasn't necessarily improved much yet (I haven't been working on speed though ) my effort going the same speed is significantly reduced - like 20-40bpm. I 100% recommend checking TI out!! |
