Subject: An Exciting Ride...
I live in BFE and what I love about where I live can sometimes be what I dislike about what I live.  Living in a farm community is wonderful when I go riding and I can smell the fresh cut hay and the fresh country air but tonight the farm thing wasn't such a blessing.  I was riding my bike along a back road where I often ride and came around a corner to see a small herd of mules in the road.  They were spread out across the road so there was no going around them.  I thought that I should ride up to the next house and tell somebody that they were loose.  There were five of the escapees occupying the road where I wanted to ride and three of them stood out 1. the young, dumb, skittish one, 2. the boss and 3. Hannibal Lecter (A huge mule standing a head above the rest wearing a leather muzzle)
I was raised around livestock and the way the young one was acting, I didn't trust him and rode to the other side of the rode near "the boss".  He came towards me as I came towards him and I veered even more towards the shoulder, picking up gravel and making me worry for a moment I might fall.  I didn't... but as I passed him, the trouble-maker turned and kicked at me.  I tried to ignore him and pretend he didn't scare me in the least.  As I passed I started hearing the clip-clopping of hooves and looked back to see the ringleader in pursuit of me and the others immediately joined in.  I couldn't quite believe that I was being chased by a pack of mules!  I pedaled as fast as I could (which is NOT very fast) and they turned and walked away looking bored.  I think the instigator just wanted to scare me and he was satisfied and gloating.  I was raised around horses and mules and they don't usually scare me but for some reason being on my bike made me feel vulnerable.
As I rode away, I looked down to see I was covered in bugs.... kind of like the grill on a car.... gross... it never crossed my mind that this could happen and why haven't I read about being covered in bugs on BT????  I am fairly addicted to the forums.... I am sure someone should have mentioned it by now!  Then, I got stung or bit or something high on my shoulder blade.  All I know is it hurt and then it itched the rest of the way home.
I was bemoaning my ride but then I thought, I don't know anybody in this town and spend all my time alone.  Maybe I needed a little excitement in my life.  After all, it has been quite some time since I was chased by a stud.... even if he was gelded!

Interesting ride!

My worst thing with bugs is they fly in my mouth...I just spit them out unless they go down my throat. Or if I'm in grasshopper season in Minnesota they fly into me and they hurt as they are big.

Once I took a nature break in the woods and came out covered in tiny bugs like 100 of them, just brushed them off.

Great description of your crazy ride!
Yeah.....I get covered in bugs. I use major heavy duty sunscreen and the bugs just stick to it. Once went for coffee in the middle of a long ride and looked down....covered in tiny black bugs. So stylish sitting there in the cafe in spandex, bad hair and bugs!!

Great story!

There are quite a few small ranches - sheep, cattle, horses and, yes, mules - along my daily commute, which also happens to be my favorite cycling route.  Every couple months, the cattle make a break for it and clog up the roads.

Fortunately, I have not encountered the same while on the bike.  The worst I have run into (so far), is the stench that results when a rancher floods the manure-rich fields.

OMG. Chased by a herd of mules on the bike! Covered in bugs! I'm sure it was terrifying, but it made me laugh. Thanks for the smile and glad you lived to tell about it

Wow, that was an exciting ride! It would never occur to me that mules would chase you like that. Never been covered in bugs, but have one did hit the back of my throat while I was running. I thought I'd swallowed it, but about 20 minutes later it worked its way back up to the tip of my tongue and I spit it out.

During my ride last weekend I was riding near a river and the bugs were everywhere. I was pelted by bugs of all sorts. It was tons of fun, I ended that section of the ride by getting hit and stung by a bee in my face. It happens, not particularly fun, but it does happen.

Interesting story.

I looked at my shadow once while riding.  The shadow looked a little foggy behind me.  I realized it was a huge swarm of flies.  Ugh.

Getting chased by mules, though does take the cake on interesting rides.

haha when you started writing about them chasing you, I started envisioning you riding through the next town with a herd about 50ft behind you, just trotting along.

I had a laugh today when I started heading into Machester, PA and there was a sign that read "No Soliciting or peddling."  Now, I know it didn't say "pedaling" but it still made me smile.

You almost made me spit out my beer! I've had an encounter while running with a bull being walked up the street to a new paddock but chased by mules is something I hope I never have to worry about.

cool story!  I get pelted by bugs a lot as my run is by a river.  Those damn may flies are so tiny and travel in those swarms you can't see till you are running through them...gross.  Often I come home and see my neck or hair covered in them....i try to avoid dawn and dusk when they are most previlent but it is hard during the hottest days of summer.
