Subject: Triathlete killed in Louisville
Just saw in the news where a triathlete competing in the Tom Sawyer Sprint triathlon was killed while on the bike leg this morning. 2 guys in a car speeding past the group hit him and tried to take off. After being caught the cops found them to be drunk. (at 8:00am!!!) Terrible tragedy that did not need to happen... Thoughts and prayers to both families.

story is on the local news sites in Louisville

Be careful out there

Someone posted on the Tri Talk forum that those of us who participated in the race should contact the prosecuting officer/attorney and oblige to be interviewed/testify. I have no legal knowledge, but this sounds like a good idea. We could at least make it clear how extremely out of it one would have to have been to hit a rider on Chamberlain lane, the conditions, what we saw in the aftermath, etc.. If I find out who to contact, I will post it and would appreciate anyone else doing the same. Maybe we can do a small part in keeping this piece of crap off the roads for longer.

I competed in this race last year and I don't remember there being traffic on Camberlain Lane during the race. I know that there were police at the intersection of Chamberlainn and Old Lagrange Rd. Were the riders having to navigate traffic during the race? If so, I don't understand why the roads can't be closed to traffic for a few hours during the race. Is it a cost issue?

I competed in race.  The course was closed just as I entered T1, so never saw how traffic was being directed/handled.  The accident murder caused the roads to be closed.  Cost would of been much less in human and monetary terms to close the roads for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

I hope they do run race again next year, in memory of the victim, and with the roads closed to all traffic.

I was about 15 minutes behind the murder.  I did not see a single car, other than the police and rescue vehicles on the 7 miles out.  It was not an issue of too much traffic/congestion or too little police inforcement.   The killer was simply out of control.  IMO.

Agreed, I was likely not far behind you BMass.  What was your race number?  Were you able to finish?

I was #125.  They started announcing the race cancelation within a few minutes of me finishing.   Batlou, did you get to finish?  What was your race#?

Do you mean 325?  When I finished as I was walking to the drink table the lady came on and told us to go home.  No post race stretch, cool down or anything.  Just got my stuff loaded it up and left.  I understand given the cirmumstances but I am paying the price for not properly cooling down and stretching afterwards.  We must have been very close to each other.  The clock read 2:08 when I crossed so I am thinking that with about a 20 minute head start from the first one in the water my time should be around 1:48.

I am hoping to do another one real soon so that I can actually enjoy the moment instead of feeling guilty for being excited.

Batlou, I was #425!  I had it in my head that I was the 125th person to get started.  I confuse myself sometimes.  The clock was on 2:09 when I finished.  I must've been hot on your trail.  My math gives me a 42 minute wait to get into the pool and a time of about 1:27.

I spoke with someone at Tom Sawyer today and they said they were planning to meet tomorrow on how to post results.  Clearly they will not be giving out awards but they wanted to figure out a way to publish the times for those that were lucky enough to finish.  She said look for something likely next week.

BTW...You kicked my butt.  heh.

Even though I only completed swim, I hope they post results. It was by far my best swim ever. With running, I'm very good at estimating my pace.  Being new to swimming, I really have no idea, just that I was passing allot of people.

Before the start, someone standing in line with me was saying that the shallow water was going to make the times much faster.  Don't know if that's true or not.

Edited to add following: What's sucks is not only how bad I feel for John Carr and his family, but how guilty I feel for wanting to know about my performance.

That is horrible they should be locked up for the rest of their life.  There was obvisouly a triathlon happening there and anyone allowed to drive on the course like that should use extra care and I am really glad the cops got him.
