Todays ride was with a neighbor who hadn't been riding in a couple of years. Real athletic guy, just hadn't gotten out on the bike. We threw his bike on the stand yesterday, checked the brakes, the shifters, the tires, the frame and the handle bars. Didn't check the pedals.

Towards the end of the ride, we are climbing up a long steep hill, and he stands up on the pedals. His pedal falls off, and he wipes out real good. Road rash on the outside of his elbow, a huge chunk of skin from the tip of his elbow, and a cracked up helmet. We had to call in reinforcements to get him home.

Hope your neighbor is OK and is back in the saddle soon.

What's scarier is that it can happen anytime. A couple years or a couple of days between rides. A safety check of your equipment should be a habit before every ride.

Scary! This is another reason to tear down an old bike to the frame and rebuild, overhaul, or regrease all the parts, if it hasn't been used in a while.  Or even just as part of the annual overhaul.

Two weeks after I got my mountain bike I took my bike for a ride on a 13mile fairly difficult trail that was also my 1st time on the trail.  From the beginning of the ride I kept hearing a clicking and figured it was the stock pedals breaking.  I've broken a ton of pedals through BMX so I knew the sound well.

About 12 miles into the ride my crank arm fell off.  Apparently when the bike shop put it together they didn't crank down hard enough on the crank bolt.

The pedal didn't break - it unscrewed. I'm not sure exactly - he said that he put the pedals back on a while ago, but was pretty sure he cranked them down hard. Maybe a little Loctite or something.

Wait a second, how can they just come off?  Either way you peddle you tighten the pedals down right?  I think the right side is reverse thread too.

It is, but I have heard of pedals falling off before.
