Pre-race routine:

Awoke at 5:10 had a breakfast bar and drink. Left hotel about 5:45 in gray overcast skies and hear a clap of thunder in the distance. Arrived at the race parking near the Please Touch Museum and grabbed an extra goretex and plastic poncho before heading down about 1/3 mile to the transition area to get marked. On the way down the hill a rainstorm passed and we were able to wait it out 10 minutes under an overpass.
Event warmup:

Due to weather the race was postponed a bit and the swim portion was replaced with a 1.5 mile run in addition to the 3.1 mile run.

Bike

  • 15.53 miles

Comments:

It started raining during my second lap. I saw the remnants of a few crashes as the road became slippery so I slowed down quite a bit. I was happy with my bike portion despite the rain.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I changed my socks since my shoes were soaked. I ran out with my bike gloves still on but I shoved them in my back pocket and kept going.
What would you do differently?:

practice transitions more
Run

  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

About 1/3 into my run it started raining with thunder and lightning. Once I got to the turn around I realized there were fewer and fewer coming towards the turn around and then none. It ends up they called the race about 10 minutes into my run, I ran back in a torrential downpour seemingly dodging lightning bolts along the way slogging through puddles and 100 yard visibility.

I got to finish but not many did. About half the 2000 entires got to finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Grab stuff and go. There was up to 6 inches of water and people (non participants) wandering around the transition area when I returned.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1-the weather
2-Me

Event comments:

Due to horrible weather the race was called before most finished. I was one of those who did. As soon as I finished I grabbed my gear and headed back to my car as did everyone. It was to be my first triathlon but I will find another soon. The organizers did the best they could given the awful weather situation.

I'm glad you got to finish.  So did I, but I respectfully disagree.  I don't think the race director did everything she could.   She could have called the race earlier.  People were left in the farthest parts of the bike course with no help.  Transition was abandoned by the race organizers and anyone could have stolen gear.  This was a race of first time triathletes.  It was their job to keep a close eye on the weather and make decisions to keep people safe.  They didn't do that.  They knew the swim was going to be canceled and they didn't act early enough to get the race started as a duathlon on time when they could have.  There are horror stories from out there.  I will get my RR up soon.
