Subject: Problems with heart rate monitor
I am having problems with my heart rate monitor (Polar brand). It will sporadically jump to a low or 0 heart rate, or jump to a super high heart rate, when neither is accurate. The sensors on the chest strap are moist and in good skin contact. I've had this type of problem before when the batteries are dying, but I had the batteries replaced by an authorized service center just a month or two ago.

Any suggestions? Is this a common problem? Are there other brands that are more reliable?

Thanks!
Lori

did you send the strap/transmitter in with the watch?  Sometimes that starts to fail.  Also, is it clean?

Mine Timex goes crazy sometimes when I run under high-voltage power lines, even though I'm told that isn't supposed to affect it.

There is a building that I ride by that causes my HR, speed, and cadence to go nuts. I don't know what is in the building (no signs and tall fences). Does it happen only in a particular area?

Otherwise I would have guessed the poor skin contact. Sometimes that will happen to me until I get a good sweat going.

Have had the same problem with an older (2+ years) Polar. I blamed it on both poor skin contact - strap was too loose, but I also ventured a dying battery was to blame. If you had the battery replaced recently, then make sure the strap is pretty snug. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new HRM (Polar again) and all is well...

Thanks for the advice, everyone!  I will make the strap more snug, and make sure the contacts are thoroughly wet when I put it on.  Maybe it was a contact issue - the problem seemed to resolve as my workout went along, so maybe the contacts needed more moisture.
