In the US, yes, always, 100%.  Two other examples are different, worldwide.

In Schipol airport (Netherlands), it is not expected to bus your table at the restaurant, which included a Sbarro and a McDonalds. If you try to bus your own, you get funny looks and kinda screw up their system.

And in China, you NEVER bus your table. It's pretty ingrained in Chinese culture that everyone's got a job, and it's someone's job to bus the tables(or pick up trash), you don't do your job for them, ever. Perfect for-instance....not in a FF restaurant, but just in public....I'm walking down a sidewalk with my host, and the guy in front of me throws a wrapper of some sorts on the ground...literally 15ft from a garbage can.  Huh?  So I make a move to pick up the wrapper, and my host tells me to stop...and watch. 30 seconds later, a guy comes down, picks up the wrapper, puts it in the trash. That's his job. Don't mess with it.

I spent two hours carrying an empty soda cup around the London underground because I refused to leave it on the ground like everyone else. I don't care if it's someone's job to pick up garbage. I'm not throwing mine on the ground. But since there is someone to pick it up, there are very few public trash cans.

This would be me. It is too ingrained, I just can't litter or not take care of my trash.

funny how things remain in your head for years. I'm almost 50 years old, and I remember my 2nd grade teacher saying to imagine it was your mother who had to clean up after you, so I always bus in FF restaurants, carry my popcorn and soda garbage to the garbage at the theater etc... My parents are both immigrants and my mom actually cleaned people's homes when she first arrived, so I'm probably biased a bit.

This is pretty black and white for me.  If I'm tipping someone, I leave my 'mess'... if I'm not tipping, I clean my 'mess'.  And even if I am eating at a tipping sort of place, I still try to straighten my table up before I leave the restaraunt (silverware on the plate, wipe crumbs off the table, put condiments back where that started, etc).  My mamma would hit me upside my head if I didn't.

YOu beat me to it.  If you tip, they clean.  If you don't tip, you clean.

triOK - 2009-08-04 3:24 PM Is there a reason not to? Besides total laziness.

99.9% of the time I do.  The 0.1% time that I didn't was because the customer service sucked.  The waiter/waitress/bus person/etc. don't get paid enough, even with tips, to clean up after our slovenly selves, IMO.

I worked fast food for 4 years while in college - Taco Johns, KFC, then Arby's.  I got paid minimum wage/hour.  No tips, since it was fast food.  People, especially college kids, are selfish and slobs.  I didn't get paid enough to clean up after them.  I wouldn't do that again, even if the food I ate there for next to nothing was the staple of my food source.

I never thought of it in terms of "is it my job?" or should I make some burger-flipper do it.

I always clean up after myself in public because, IMO, it is just the right thing to do.

Yep, it's what my mama taught me!

X2. It doesn't bother me to clean up after myself at a fast food joint.
I remember when I was a burger flipper (teen years)and had to clean up after others. You wouldn't believe what a mess they left behind!
