Subject: First Olympic Tri in less than 2 Months
So i've got my first olympic tri in about two months. I've been training hard on the bike and now i'm throwing the run in there at a good pace. I can do the entire bike (22mi) and half the run (3mi) in one session (no breaks) 4 times a week at a very good pace. However, I haven't been able to do much swimming due to a lack of pool availability and no support for open water. I've always been a strong swimmer and have lots of upper body strength but I'm really nervous I wont get enough swim training in before the tri... thoughts?

IMHO...get the pool time in! Do what you have to do, and get in the pool at LEAST twice a week. 3x/week the few weeks before. With swimming, it's not upper body strength that counts, it's technique and being comfortable/calm in the water.

You'll be fine, just do what you need to do and get in the pool

Hey Jake, I would say just relax and enjoy it all! For me the hardest part of the triathlon is always the first 5 minutes of the swim, I would usually have a bit of a panic attack as soon as I put my head under water. Keep working on your fitness and get your head underwater as much as you can get in the lake or ocean and just go out and have fun! Good luck, Jim

Have you considered first starting with a sprint tri? If not, why not?

On the other hand, are you comfortable enough in the water to slow your pace and breath on your side or back without much effort? If so, then you will finish, but your time might be slow, which is okay.

First few races I got panicky during the beginning of the swim.  Breast stroke made things a lot better.  If you are good with this stroke, switch to it whenever you start breathing too heavily or need to see where you're going.  (Just don't kick anyone)

Psss.  Your bike portion is missing almost 3 miles and that's just training.  If your not putting in the swimming and only doing 3 miles of running per day why rush the oly?  I second the poster suggesting a sprint to start.
