Good Morning All, I am heading to FL in November to visit some friends and do a tri while I am there. I know very little about shipping a bike except for what I have read on this site. I don't have a case to ship it in and I hear that having a bike store pack it in a bike box is risky due to it being soft. I am considering trying to rent a bike as it would certainly be easier in many ways. Of course I would like to have my own bike but just don't know if it is worth it. Has anyone used any of the local bike stores to help with shipping a bike? I really am looking for any thoughts or suggestions about the whole thing. Thanks, Kathleen
I have always borrowed bike boxes from friends, so I can't offer you one. I have always packed it myself and taken it with me on the plane. Unfortunately United has raised their prices to $175 each way! YIKES!! Frontier is only $50 each way.
My LBS rents out a bike case for $75/week. It is one of the hard cases. I packed it myself and took it on the flight (Frontier) with no problems. However, I had direct flights, so I didn't have as much worry about losing it.
Thanks for the tips. I am starting to think that purchasing a hard case and using Fedex is the best way to go. I am confident that I will use the case again as I have already done one "destination tri" but was fortunate that my friend drove to the race and was able to take my bike. If anyone has any recommendations for hard cases that would be great. Kathleen
Thanks for the link to Velo Express. Unfortunately they only ship to certain races.
