Thinking of hitting this tri up for my first.  Just need to see if I have the swimming endurance(probably do) so I don't make a fool of myself by drowning halfway out.  Has anyone done this tri before and would a tri suit be suitable vs a full wetsuit?  (I have neither right now and have finally purchased a new road bike so I'm confident in the bike aspect)  Any thoughts.  Thanks

I did this race three years ago, and I am thinking about doing it again this year. It was my first tri, so it holds a special place in my heart. It was well organized, not too big, the swim was warm in the lake, I did not wear a wetsuit. The second half of the bike course is hilly, but very manageable. I loved this tri. I felt lots of love as a newbie!

HILLY?!?!?!?  Was it the same course as this year is going to be?  I would doubt it since the map only shows the steepest gradient of the course is only 3% for a 1/4 mile max...not my definition of hilly but I usually ride Rt. 122, Rt. 16, Sutton St., West and East Hartford Ave, etc...all of those include at least a section of 10+% or grueling 1-4 mile ascents at 5-7%...but that's just me.  Can you check it and let me know.  Thanks

Maybe it was a different course. It was three years ago. Maybe I have a crappy memory. I am sure it will be easy for you. I was a newbie, and definately a bike newbie. So if it is the same course it will be easy for you.

I ride these routes all the time!!!! Rt 122 towards Blackstone is one of my favs as it has a huge shoulder. Cant beat Quarry Hill/ Sutton Street for hill repeats! LOL

The bike route for this race is not terribly difficult. The race benifits the NICU at Memorial (a great cause) and is a memorial to a wonderful woman's triplets who were born prematurely. I cant race because of an injury but I plan on volunteering

Very much agreed.  I made it down to St. Paul Street (don't know if you go that far) from the beginning of West Hartford Ave. in just under 25 minutes earlier this week...however the hill going under the bridge on St. Paul street still kills me.  Hopefully will see you there if I do decide to do it.

I haven't done this tri but I plan on doing it for my 2nd tri, so still a newbie at this sport.  I used to live in the area and from what I remember the water is warm in Wallum lake in September.  I going to do the swim with out a wet suit because I haven't bought one yet, and don't feel like renting one.  Hopefully I will get on this winter.

And I do miss the hills of the Blackstone Valley for the biking and running.

I am considering signing up for this as it is pretty local for me and i work at umass...not nicu but ccu...be sadly we overlap sometimes. It will be my 4th this summer and I have one more the weekend after.  Haven't decided yet but your accounts of the bike route make it appealing.

I'm currently going only on what I've seen from the race homepage.  However, I plan on going out tomorrow afternoon to play golf up in the area and will most likely check it out.  If I do I'll let everyone know what it's really like

OK...here's the real deal.  I drove out and scoped out the bike and run courses today.  I don't know what the street that leads from the swim/transition (Wallum Lake) to the main road looks like since you needed to pay to go down it.  However, once on the main road, aka. Wallum Lake Road, there is a tough uphill climb lasting probably .5-1 miles in length (wasn't looking at the distances, just the profile).  Once you get over that and go through the intersection, it's all gently rolling hills (and i  do mean GENTLY) only lasting for about 100 yards at a time before going down for about a 100 and coming back up - nothing steep at all.  The double loop is like this and it will be a fast descent back to transition as you go down the nasty hill you climbed up to get to the loops.  I'm guessing speeds of 30+ will be reached if you're really trying to coming back into transition.  All in all, if you have the legs to get you up and over the climb and then to hold a decent speed around the loops, you'll be in perfect position for a high finish.  Seems to me like it's a climber's course more than a power course b/c of that first hill and the rolling terrain.

I also scoped out the run.  I'm guessing a slight uphill out of transition to Wallum Lake Road (once again, unable to drive down w/o paying) and then it's pretty flat to the turn-around point.  Back downhill to the finish.

Any other Q's feel free to post.

I've got a question: can you really have a good bike if mile 2 is right up against "Badluck Pond"? Tongue out

Good luck to all those who are racing!

Thanks for posting this info. I just registered for this race (we just found out today that the Cranberry Sprint is canceled for tomorrow). This will be my (and my husbands) 2nd race. We did the Marlborough Tri in July. This course sounds great - harder than Cranberry but not as tough as Marlborough. Look forward to seeing all on race day!Smile

I'm in. Just registered. My summer schedule has been insanely busy, but this race fits in. Should be fun. I'm also scheduled to race Duxbury the following weekend.

One more Q...how far is the transition once you get out of the water?

Its about 20 feet of sand then becomes a grassy field for transition, appears about as close and clean as can be.

Hello everyone -

In case you didn't get the e-mail. TDD changed the race course to be one loop - 10.7 miles. The change was to better accomodate the large number of particpants.

Wish I had trained more on hill now seeing the 300 ft elevation change over about 2 miles.  This will be interesting and going to kill my average speed.
