Age Group Rank = 6/16
Pre-race routine:

Got up 5AM. Rode with Jon, so it was nice to relax. Maybe too nice- forgot my breakfast! DOH!
Event warmup:

Standing in the line to get my #. Absurdly long time to get it, like 30 + minutes in line. Had just enough time to get back to transition, get set up and get into my wetsuit. Swam a but and kept trying to move to keep warm- the water was a little cold. Would have preferred to run but that wasn't going to happen in a wetsuit....
Swim

  • 1640 yards

Comments:

What can I say? I swam fast. Could have been faster but I was weaving in and out of traffic. At 6'5" 245 I don't want to be an a-hole and punch and kick my way through. Overall satisifed, this is just part of the sport, right? I figure I could have maybe gotten down to 22:30 or so had this been a straight shot minus traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe get some tinted goggles? Sun was bright.
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

OK. Had the shoes on the pedals but some minor issues getting into them. Not a bad transition. Since I didn't have breakfast I took a little time to get some gel and water in.
What would you do differently?:

Not much- other than remember the Glide to get the wetsuit off faster. Pretty good though.
Bike

Comments:

Fine ride. Opted to use the aero bars very little- after last weeks back disaster I didn't want to ruin my run. Felt wonderful on the bike, I LOVE this course. Never did the 1st part where the road takes you to the divers area- it was pretty rough surface. Overall pretty happy with this.
Passed by Mollyland @ about mile 21, always nice to see a friendly face. Felt bad she was having GI issues.
What would you do differently?:

Remove the aerobars and save the weight if I'm not going to use them. Or get fitted would be an even better idea! Pretty happy though.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Took my time here. I wanted to make sure I was going to be composed for the run. Did not want a repeat of S-M-D. Could have probably pushed it a little harder, but oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Don't know....
Run
  • 1h 09m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

OK, this looks bad. But consider after exiting transition I stopped at the port-a-pot to pee. Also took the chiropractors advice and sprayed biofreeze all over my back. Pulling off a soaking wet racesuit took some time... I'd say I was in there for a good 4 minutes, making my run pace really about 10:20? Still not great, but I'll take it. Out portion was uphill and had to walk up some hills. About mile 2 saw Cassi from CAC cheering us on- that was pretty cool! Felt good- spectators make me happy :) Finally got my legs and feet at about mile 3. Turnaround was great- the volunteers were spraying water. That was pretty refreshing. 2nd half of run went well- I don't have a Garmin but I'm willing to bet I was down well under 10 on the pace. Finished really strong, trying to beat the clock. Did it! 2:59:18- goal was 3 hours!
What would you do differently?:

Run more, run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around- found Drewulu and Mollyland. Had some pictures taken. Welcomed Jon back in. Ate a great lunch and drank a beer :)
Little stretching and laughing with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not eating. Although I don't think it made a huge difference. I need to brick more. Thinking I may get a Garmin for motivation. Have to sell the wife on that idea :)

Event comments:

Love this race! Had an awesome time, and it's always fun to race with my buddies. Thinking I may do the Crazy-Back-To-Back next year.

Nice job, Matt....you smoked me.  I finished in 3:22:53, which was still 30 minutes faster than the Boulder Peak time, but still having cramps in my hamstrings, which is killing my run times.  I wish that I could swim in the time that you do (24 minutes, way fast).  I came out in 34 minutes, which is still a PR for me at that distance.  My bike was okay, but I have help coming ( picked up a new Fuji carbon frameset two days before the event but didn't have time to do the build, but got most of it built today).
