Total Time = 1h 50m 55s
Overall Rank = 13/150
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

Bowl of oatmeal and toast about 3 hours before the start.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 1/4th mile, swam about 1/8th mile, and then waited in line probably 30 minutes until the first race finished. So much for the small warm-up...
Swim
  • 16m 16s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started 5th overall with 3 second individual waves, which made it hard for me to push myself with few people ahead of me the whole race.
What would you do differently?:

Train. I took off 2 weeks after my last race and graduated from Texas Tech.
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

I made a stupid error starting to run towards the run exit and then quickly (~5 feet) turned around and headed towards the bike exit. The racks were made of wood just wide enough for road/tri bike tires to fit into the groves with spots for bags in between bike spots. This made it easy for me to put my bike with an unusually tall bike seat to have the front tire ready to go out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Run the right direction and move the guy's helmet from hanging into my transition area off of his road bike.
Bike

Transition 2

Run
  • 27m 51s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

My feet got hot and are very sore today (the day after). I can't complain since I averaged under 7 minute miles on that course.
What would you do differently?:

Wear my trail-running shoes and not 4 oz. racing flats.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank 3 bottles of water, a Gatorade, and chocolate milk. I also jogged a little bit and walked around until the drive home after awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training consistently for 2 weeks because of graduating and giving my legs/hams a break after they nearly cramped at the last race.

Course: Wow! Trail-running through the woods with a path wide enough for one person, lots of roots, and a lot of quick little "hills" and then sudden drop, a little mud, 3 short wooden bridges, and did I mention narrow. I must say though, since this isn't in my region, I wasn't expecting to do any personal bests or anything and this was a very fun run!

Man, you smoked it. I bet your feet do hurt running that trail in flats! Way to tough it out.

Nice job, I remember seeing you come into T2, you had the Texas Tech suit on right?

Yes, I had the Texas Tech singlet on. It was nice starting off 5th and not having a bunch of ppl to contend with in the water, but I do better on the bike and especially on the run with ppl within eyesight. Like I said though, it didn't count for me b/c of my region but I did have a lot of fun!
