Hi - is everyone who has this race scheduled planning on doing the sprint? And does anyone have feedback on the other races this group put together this year? Suncrest seems to me like a terrific venue for a race (if the winds don't get out of control).

I think Daybreak will be awesome, and it will likely be windy (hopefully not enough to interfere with balance, though. I am doing the sprint, but I do know a few who are doing the Olympic. Which are you doing?

I did the Stansbury tri in May. It was put on by this same organization. It was a great race! Everything was very well coordinated and the volunteers were amazing. It was an open bike course. There were two semi-serious wrecks on the bike. One was car related and one was not. In my opinion the course was well marked and it seemed to be a dumb driver that caused the accident, not a lack of attention on behalf of the organizers. I was registered for the Daybreak Sprint, but I got hit while on a training ride in late June. Just finishing up PT in the next couple of weeks. So, I probably won't be ready in time for the Daybreak race. From what I've read, it sounds like a great venue.

I live just below daybreak and have ridden the same bike route that will be used for the race many times.  Very rarely is it completely calm in regards to wind.  Most of the time it's not too bad but I've also been on some rides where it seems like the wind is in your face regardless of which way you are going.  The first few miles are on a false flat and then there are a couple good hills leading up to the entrance of the Kenecott mine before turning around.  A couple times coming down the hill the wind has hit me where I had to hold on tight so I wouldn't take a spill but nothing too crazy.  The only bad thing is the road heading west before the hills isn't great.  Lots of bumps and cracks.  The run is completely flat so that should make things a little easier.  The water should be pretty warm.  I've actually been swimming up there quite a bit the last several weeks and it's been very nice.  Should be a great race!

msingley, have you ben swimming in Oquirrh Lake? I thought it was closed to swimming (except for the race). I am excited about this race--excited about the venue, and not too intimidated by the wind . The run IS beautiful! I run that route regularly.

Great responses thanks. I'm planning on doing the Olympic if I decide to race. This race thread was tied to the sprint and that is why I asked.

I understood the lake was closed to swimmers as well. It seems to me it could be one of the best places in the valley for an OWS.

Well, can I just say "no comment" about the no swimming rule at Oquirrh Lake?  They do allow wading so let's just say I have "waded" up there many times over the past several weeks in preparation for the Jordanelle tri this Saturday and the Daybreak tri in September.  If you bike around the lake, there are a million people in the water where the beach areas are and there is plenty of swimming going on.  I believe they have the rule in place because the lake is still owned by Kennecott.  Once South Jordan purchases the lake I'm betting swimming will be allowed.

Is south jordan buying the lake? or will it remain part of the daybreak HOA? I would LOVE to have So Jordan buy it. I could walk there. Have you guys been out to the new reservoir in Herriman?  (Blackridge Reservoir). It's cold, but only about 10 minutes south of Daybreak. I go with a few friends about once each week. I'm game to go more often if anyone wants to go try it out.

And, yeah, I'd plead the fifth about where I wade, too.

I haven't tried the new resevoir in Herriman but wanted to get up there to try it out.  What's the water temp there?  Any idea of the distance across the lake?

Regarding Oquirrh Lake, I've heard rumors that S. Jordan would buy it at some point but haven't heard anything official.

The water is actually pretty cold. It's used for secondary irrigation in Riverton, so it's continually cycling through. I thoroughly enjoy my wetsuit every time I go up there.

Was checking it out today after a swim up at the Herriman reservoir. Noticed a few people doing some "deep wading". And it was WINDY.

What would you say the distance is across Blackridge? I'm thinking maybe 250 diagonal from the "boat ramp" to the house with the white vinyl fence (southeast to northwest), 200 from the house with the white fence to the utility box (northwest to northeast corners, and then maybe 150 north to south (ramp to the utility box). Loop total around 600? Maybe a little less. I usually count each triangular lap as 500 yards, just to be conservative. Any thoughts?

When I was at the open water clinic at Blackridge, I heard someone say that they had taken a laser measurement and that the lake is about 180 yards by 100 yards.  Theoretically (using the pythagorean theorem) that makes the diagonal about 205 yards and the triangle 485 yards.  Of course it always seems MUCH longer to me!

Finally gave  Blackridge a try today.  Seemed colder than Oquirrh Lake but I didn't think it was very cold as an earlier poster.  Maybe the same as Jordanelle where I raced last week (70 degrees?).  I did some drills across the lake (North to South) and it seemed to be around a 100 yds to me.  I would have guessed the length from west to east was 200.  The place was packed.  It was a good place to swim but I'm not sure I'd want to have a "day at the beach" there.  The beaches and playground areas at Oquirrh lake are a lot nicer in my opinion.  However, if you live up in Herriman it's obviously more convenient to go to Blackridge.

So is anyone else concerned about swimming in a man-made lake built on over 100 years of mine tailings or am I just being paranoid?

I think the mine tailings are further north--and the more recent tailings are out by the Great Salt Lake (Magna). The foothills the reservoir is on are natural (I think). I actually live on top of what was once a berm for a tailings pond. So far, so good, until they started building daybreak and let their upturned soil blow around unmitigated. That was fun. And, the water cycles through so often I don't think there's much time for leaching to happen even if it is over tailings. I'm more worried about the yuck/slime from Utah Lake that seems to be migrating up there. The visibility isn't the greatest. But on a positive note there's no ducks, so I'll just think happy green thoughts while I swim, LOL.

SO...it sounds like we might be doing a duathlon instead of a triathlon. Is/did anybody going to packet pickup in Lehi tonight? I'd be interested to hear what they said there about the possible change.

Yea, I was really bummed when I saw the email.  I am getting marked tomorrow so I don't know what kind of updates they were giving people in Lehi today.  Sounds a little strange.  There's 3 confirmed cases of this ringworm and they don't even know if it came from the lake?  Can't we all just sign wavers saying we understand there's a chance we might get the bug?  I really don't want to just do a duathlon?  Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow what the plan is.

I volunteering now as I've got a case of Achilles tendinitis. Was SUPPOSED to be in Lehi tonight to help with packet pick up but couldn't find the dang place.

Will be there tomorrow and will try to post an update later . . . although packet pick-up is going fairly late.

So we are doing a 75 yard swim, running about a mile to the original transition area, then doing the bike and run as planned. Olympic swimmers first, one new swimmer every 5 seconds. They will be shuttling athletes from the transition area to the pool before the race starts. I have no idea if they have a plan for where we will put our shoes while we swim, though. The pool is outdoor, and is only 3 lanes wide.

I have to say this is a creative solution.
