Subject: Flat. Caused by spoke maybe?
Ahhh!  I wanted to do a decent ride today but when I got everything ready, it didn't take long to discover that my rear tire was flat.  The rear tire has been slowly leaking but not enough to get too excited about.  It would drop about 10 psi between rides but I wasn't sure whether there was an actual leak or just the temp differences from where it was stored.  Anyway, I picked up a spare tube and Slime Scabs (all the store had) so I could replace the tube and patch the current one as a spare.  When I took it apart, I noticed that the rim tape (rubber) was punctured and the tube was punctured on the inside at the same spot.  Now, this would normally make me thing "spoke" right?  My spokes are down inside the hole.  I tried to move the spoke but it's tight.  I don't see how it could have possibly punctured the rim tape and tube.  I felt along the hole to where you can gain access to the spoke and I felt no burrs with my fingers either.

I replaced the tube with the new one and filed the tire with air.  I was cleaning the bike when I suddenly heard HSSSSSSSSSSS and it was flat.  Same mark on the tube.  WTF?  Please tell me what I'm missing here.  I've had spoke punctures before but they were pretty easy to see because the spoke ends were just under the rim tape and the spoke was loose, allowing it to move.  That is not the case on my bike so I don't see how it could possibly puncture the tube.

Oh, and does anyone like the Slime Scabs?  I've never used them before.  I tried one but it didn't hold.  I don't know if it's due to the existing problem I have right now or if they are just not that good.

Oh, don't make fun of my cheapie Schwinn but here is what the wheels look like.  They are 700c x 25 tires.

You need to replace your rim tape. The hole is what's causing the flats.

Yep. What he said. Had the same thing happen last year. Get a high quality rim strip ($5 max)and you should be good to go.

I thought about that as well.  I grabbed another tube tonight but before putting it on, I ran two layers of black electrical tape around the rim.  I put it over top of the existing rim tape / rubber to help reinforce it.  So far so good.  I was looking for something better but the only thing I could find was Slime brand and they didn't have the right size for my bike.  I probably could have cut it to make it work but I'll go with the temporary redneck solution for now, just so I can get a ride in tomorrow.

I've run some black electrical tape over worn rim tape areas for a few years on a set of wheels I have. Been fine, never had a problem again and have just left that tape there.

Velox rim tape. It is the last rim tape you will ever have to buy. Seriously.

Just saw this while looking for something else.  I have the same bike and had the same exact problem, punctured tube hole in the rim tape.  Replaced the tape and problem solved.  1 month later had to do the front.  The tape just does not handle the PSI along with my 230.

I also vote rim tape.  I had some tape that had stretched out a bit on my MTB and I was getting a flat just about every time I went out for a week.  The rim tape was pretty new, so I figured it was ok (but I think I stretched it when I swaped it from one set of rims to another).

As soon as I replaced it, problem went away and no more flats.

I just switched to Velox 2 weeks ago.  First thing the sag vehicle recommended during my last flat.

It's not the spoke poking into the tube, it's probably the tube pooching down into the hole under pressure and pinching itself on the edge.

Agree on the Velox.  Seems like electrical tape might stretch into the spoke holes under pressure.

This is a question, not suggestion.  Could you rub wax into the recessed holes to keep tubes from developing those pressure points? (in addition to good tape).

HA!  Like you, I had to do the front 1 month after the back.  It was definitely the rim tape.  I simply used three layers of black electrical tape for now.  I may look to pick up some of the better rim tape when I replace the tires.

Seems like that would be messy, especially if you ever had to replace a spoke.  And unneccesary if you use good rim tape, which isn't expensive or hard to install.
