Subject: Bike Hitch
OK, I'm about to buy a bike rack and have a hitch installed on the car. I'm concerned about the "tongue weight" specified by different racks. I get the idea that a 1 1/4 inch class 1 receiver hitch will only be able to handle a rack that carries two bikes. I want to carry 4. Does this mean I need the 2" hitch and a class 2 or 3?

HELP!

Thanks!

I'm not overly familiar with hitches, but I thought a 2" was standard. If there's any hesitation with the 1 1/4, go bigger.

Steve,

A 1 1/4" receiver hitch should be plenty strong to hold even 4 bicycles. The total tongue weight should be 100lbs or less. Ask the folks who are installing it what the max tongue weight is allowed. The most common problem with the 1 1/4's is that most racks & related accessories are designed around the 2" receiver. If your heart is set on the 1 1/4" inch system getting the following product will greatly open up your possibilities - http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml...

It costs about 33 bucks, if you haven't had the hitch installed yet your money might be better spent just getting a 2" system.

Good luck!
