Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 48/61
Pre-race routine:

Decided at last minute to drive up with the family. Stayed at a hotel near the site. Slept pretty well, even with a 1yr old in the same bed. Got up before the alarm at 5am and left at 5:30. Had a powerbar and water.
Event warmup:

Just walking down to the swim start.
Swim
  • 38m 19s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I didn't feel like I sighted very well but sounds like I wasn't the only one. Heard some of the buoys might have drifted but I felt wide most of the way. The sun was bright on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 47s
Comments:

Took my time, put the Garmin on. It was fun to run up from the river with my 5 year old. I forgot about being tired or anything else. Very cool.
What would you do differently?:

Sunglass fogged up... maybe wait until I was going to put them on.
Bike
  • 3h 13m 29s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good for the first 20 miles then legs got tired earlier than normal. Maybe didn't taper enough. Engine still needs work (and maybe replace the 10 yr old tank bike:). Miles 25 to 40 more difficult than training rides but last 6 miles felt great... maybe tail wind or downhill. Glad I had the tune-up done at Final Kick.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on a higher cadence.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Legs felt good getting off. No cramps, just a bit stiff.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 34m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out nicely. Kept a good pace and hit mile 1 at 8:30ish. Didn't want to push the stomach too much so I took water at the aid stations. Wasn't as hot I feared. Hit a portopotie at mile 4 which may have disrupted by pattern. Mile 6 was 1 hr and fatigue started to set-in. Started taking some walking breaks but stomach got tighter. Saw the oreos at the turn and said I'd have one on the way back for motivation. Kept walking the aid stations until mile 11 and walking got more frequent but kept moving. Mile 12 and 13 were slow but finished with a run and some cheers from the family.
What would you do differently?:

Longest training run was 12 miles. Go for 14 just for the mental aspect. Stomach tightness was present, still need to work on nutrition plans.
Post race
Warm down:

Took on some food but didn't feel like eating much. Was happy to have finished my first HIM.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Perhaps undertrained some but was healthy which was most important.

Event comments:

Good race and well run by Set-up. Nice to have Final Kick on site too. Great weather and really enjoyed the trail portion for the shade.

Great work this weekend. I felt the swim was slightly off as well.
