Subject: cold weather Tri?
The lake george tri is scheduled for sept 21st , The weather report is showing lows in the 40's and high of 63F. The start time is 8:30 am so I'm thinking air temp maybe in the low 50's , water temp is below 70 degrees.

My concern is on how to dress for the 24 mile bike portion of the race? Should I sacrifice transition times to put on tights and a nylon jacket? I get cold chills thinking of riding in shorts and a singlet...
should I be concerned with Hypothermia???? Please help!!

This is my first olympic distance although I have completed 5 shorter distance Tri's, A finish time of 3:30 would make me real Happy !

have you ever ridden when it was 50F out?  for me i would ride in shorts and race jersey, but even for a training ride at 50F id be in shorts and maybe a long sleeve depending on how much effort and how long i expect to be out.  i would ride in what you are comfortable for the temperature and not worry too much about transition times, if you are comfortable on the ride i think thats worth more time than a couple extra minutes in transition to become comfortable.

I don't think you need to worry about hypothermia at those temps.

My experience has been that the excitement and the adrenalin of the race and the fact that I am pushing really hard means that I don't feel the cold as much during a race as I would on a regular training ride.

I would personally dress as if the temp for the race were going to be 10 degrees warmer than the forecast.  No tights, but possibly a long sleeve bike jersey.  If the temp were in the 40's, I'd go with full finger bike gloves as well.

Also think about arm warmers for the bike, if you get too warm, just take them off and stuff in the back of your jersey

In lieu of putting on gloves, if the air temp is <50, just take a couple of zip ties and those hand warmer packets (like for camping/hunting -find at the sporting goods store in the camping section), and strap them to the aerobars, hoods of the bike, whereever you normally keep your hands..
I've done that for the really code races and the warmth on the palm of the hand helps without sacrificing T-1 time.

Agree with what someone else posted, the race day adrenaline is worth about 10 degrees and your core will be warm by the time you reach the bike.

Whatever you choose, practice getting on the gear in T-1 by having wet arms/legs to see how hard it will be.  Gloves, while easy to slip on when dry, are a real bear when wet so if gloves are needed, hopefully they are loose....

I'd be interested in hearing back what you wore and how it went, temperature wise....
