Subject: training
I have recently decided to do a sprint tri in the spring (April or May) and I think I am going to start with the 2X balanced training program.  I am currently able to bike 10K and run 5K but the swimming will require some work i'm sure.  For the last couple of months I have been doing HIIT on the elliptical trainer 3 times a week and a full body weight training program 2 times a week, my question is should I stop doing my HIIT and weights or just fit them in.  I hear a lot about the importance of rest days so I would keep doing my current training on the days that I am doing the tri training.  The HIIT i do lasts for about 20 min but is quite a good workout and the weight training is 30-40 min.

Weight training is a topic that divides triatheletes, so you are going to get conflicting advice, here.  My (inexpert, inexperienced) advice is to find a triathlon-specific plan and follow it.  There are plans that include weight training and plans that don't.  (Search the forums here and you'll find the full range of views -- you'll habve to decide for yourself whioch one to follow.)

Another un-expert opinion...If you want to get good at lifting weights and good on the elliptical, keep doing them. If you want to get good at swim, bike, and run, then you need to do more swim, more bike and more run.

I've tried your way (get it? tri'ed?), twidds. You can get away with it for a sprint (90-120 minutes), provided you can swim. If you decide you really like tri and you want to move up to an olympic distance, you just won't have time for much weight training and elliptical work.

I am trying to add a couple of weight sessions a week (pure vanity), but it has to take a backseat to s/b/r.

Welcome and enjoy your first race!

What is the full-body weight training you use? I need something that is full body a few times a week. Did P90x and it just took too much time. I lost a ton of cardio. Want something that is just as you mentioned! Thanks!

I am able to fit weight training in at noon at the gym at work and get my sbr in the evening or sometimes in the am (Providing I dont get lazy and sleep in).  What I found was that the weight training takes alot more out of me than I was counting on in the terms of energy.  While I may be looking better (vanity driving the weights), I am sure that if I want to train for anything more than an oly I will have to cut back on the weights. I am sure that will upset my wife a bit... lol

You can fit weight training in if you find the time, but your body will tell you when its too much.
