Subject: Can I do the marathon?
I could use some BT advice...not sure if I'm freaking out over nothing.

I'm registered for the Marine Corps Marathon on 10/25. My training had been going really well and I was very excited for the race (my first marathon -- my parents and grandmother were coming to DC for support, etc.) I'm also registered for the Army Ten Miler on 10/4.

Last weekend, I had a volunteer gig at George Washington University that involved being in close contact with a lot of the students. The university is in the middle of a swine flu outbreak and despite my many precautions, I ended up catching it (or at least, I caught SOMETHING). I've been a dead woman walking since Monday -- I missed work all week and I'm still coughing pretty badly.

Am I going to be able to come back and run these races? I'm thinking if I can start running again next week I might be able to pull it off, but I'm not sure how much fitness I've lost in this week off. I was supposed to do a 20-miler this weekend, which obviously isn't happening -- but maybe I could do an 18 or 20 miler next weekend, then the Army Ten Miler the weekend after, then another 20 miler the next weekend, and then start my taper?

My logs are up to date. Thanks for any advice.

You'll be fine.  You've logged a lot of miles running and the break from training came at a good time....you still have 2 good weeks to train and then taper.  Good luck and have fun!

Don't worry about lose of fitness, a weeks not bad.  My advice would be to take your next long run very easy.  Even after you are well, the sluggishness will hang around.  I'm not suggesting skipping the 10K, but just keep in mind that if you hit it hard, you might be run down to the point that it effects you important long run.

Good luck.
