Team Magic

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 38m 26s
Overall Rank = 74/281
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/24
Pre-race routine:

Wheat bagel, Accelerade. 45 minute drive to the Gulf. Good parking. Set up transition. Ate some crackers and drank some water Visited with a few folks and then walked down the beach for beginning of swim.
Event warmup:

Swam a little to warm up. Ate a gel and got in line for time trial start.
Swim
  • 26m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first OWS in an event. In previous tri the water had been so shallow I was able to walk most of the way. Had practiced in calm open water but the Gulf had a pretty good chop going. I was very slow in the water so there had to be a current carrying me down the beach. By the halfway point all I wanted to do was touch dry land. Totally whipped as I exited to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Swim in calmer water and drink less of the Gulf!
Transition 1
  • 04m 53s
Comments:

SLOW! But I was toasted from the swim. Need big improvement here. Need to be more efficient. Should have been through T1 in half the time.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster-although I felt like I was moving quickly.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 42s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.79 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first olympic distance race. In previous sprint and duathlon I had just hammered it so I worked on pacing. Small chain ring and high cadence for most of first 12 miles-keeping an eye on HR. Moved into big ring around mile 13 and increased speed and HR. Moved back to small ring for last 3/4 mile to get ready for the run. Wanted to save something for the run and although it was still brutal I ended up with 2nd fastest run time in age group.
What would you do differently?:

Could have gone harder earlier but pleased with pacing. Bike segment went quickly.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Much better-2nd fastest T2 in age group. What is my deal during T1???
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 54m 15s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

By this point it was really hot and the sun was baking. Felt pretty good off the bike and started out with a good pace. Walked a little at the turnaround and a few times on the way back so I am pleasantly surprised with my time/pace. I was ready to be done and alot of folks were struggling with the heat.
What would you do differently?:

Not walk-but at the time I needed it
Post race
Warm down:

Chilled our with family. Cleaned up and hung out for some of the post race activities. Plenty of cold beverages and food looked good-just wasn't ready to eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need to keep at it. Satisfied with result 6 months in to this triathlon thing. Still plenty of room for improvement.

Event comments:

Good race all around. Only problem was no water/fluid at mile 2/5. Given the heat it would have been a good idea. Well run.
