Pre-race routine:

Packed everything the night before, so I just woke up, and took a hot shower to get loosened up a little. Did not really feel that great this morning and wasn't looking forward to the race, figured it was just pre race nerves. There was a group of friends racing with me from church and work and I wanted to beat them all.
Event warmup:

Got my transition setup, body marking and my timing chip. Did a little run around the mall to warm up, hung out with alot of friends and the wife and kids.
Run
  • 14m 14s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started off bad, I thought I was going a decent pace then realized I was already in the back of the pack, which really surprised me. I then had to decide if I was going to bust ass to get back to the middle of the pack or to just continue and bust it on the bike.I wanted to stay around 14 minutes (which I did) and thought I would be in a good situation. I knew I would have to motor on the bike due to the poor 1st leg of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Started off faster, seeing me in the back of the pack so soon really played with my mind.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

T1 went ok except I could not figure out why my helmet did not fit correctly and then a race official yelled "it's on backwards" which really made me feel like an idiot, but that just goes to show the type of race I was having. Other than that, I was happy.
What would you do differently?:

helmet on correctly!
Bike
  • 44m 49s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.08 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went fairly good, I was able to pass alot of people. I knew I had to make up time since my run was so crappy, so I went harder than I wanted. I was familiar with this course so there were not any surprises.
What would you do differently?:

get to the bike segment faster by having a better 1st run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

T2 went smooth
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 16m 51s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

This second run was harder and really pushed me to the wall. I honestly thought I was going to throw up running up the last hill. By this time I knew I was not going to hit my time goal, so I just had to keep pushing.
What would you do differently?:

It just wasn't my day running
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a Powerade and coke and walked around, hugged the wife and kids and cheered on my friends who were still racing. Cheered on Jake and Jared as they did the kids 1 mile fun run (Jake in 8 min, Jared in 8:39) They rocked it.
I still beat last years time, but not by as much as I had hoped.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure what my problem was today but I just did not have anything in the tank while running.

Event comments:

3rd time I have done this race, and each time I get faster. Looking forward to 2010.

Great job!  I would be very happy with those times.  You ran a 7:07 pace and you are not happy!?  And an 8:26 after the bike sounds good to me as well.  That was funny (not reallyLaughing) about the bike helmet.  Good times by the kiddos!

Way to stick it out!  I'm jealous of your times. =) The helmet trouble was definitely a teachable moment and I'm sure you won't have that problem again.   Nice job!
