Well it is almost certain that DH and I will sign up for Augusta when it opens.

Any hotel recommendations from those of yall who did the race this year. Pros and Cons to where you stayed? Anything to keep in mind?

Any help is greatly appreciated

My friend and I stayed at the Baymont Inn and Suites in West Augusta. It was pretty nice. I'm not sure of prices but it had to be less than the host hotel. While it was west of town it wasn't super far or complicated to get back downtown. (I think less than 15 minutes, 25 with the lights) Once we figured it out, it was actually pretty easy. The only drawback is that it's off an access road near some road construction that was confusing but that should be finished in the next couple of months.

And as a bonus: they start serving breakfast at 6 so when we were leaving at 5:30, coffee was already out.

Mariott Suites (not hotel) ... it has a separate "living room" with a pull out bed. We booked early and got a $112/night rate.  Staying at the host hotel is priceless in that you can walk down to the race briefing, registration, the shuttles and so forth.

Great race.

We stayed at the Baymont by I-20 exit 200. total cost was 100.00 and it only took like 10 minutes to get to the race down the Riverwatch Parkway. We booked late, but it worked for us. Good enough for the wife and I.

Second the Marriott. We checked this morning before heading home and the rates for 2010 were not in the computer yet. I talked with a girl from the event staff and she said they were signing a contract with the Marriott again as the host hotel. $112 a night to be 2 blocks from the finish, packet p/u and expo right down the stairs...priceless!!! I even had time after finishing to go to T2, pack my stuff, ride the bike back to the hotel, shower, then return to the finishline to cheer the wife.
Great spot.

We stayed at the Ramada. It was OK.

Two predictions for next year:

Staying at the Marriott, and kicking arse in the 35-39 AG!

See yous there!

We stayed at the Ramada on Broad St. this year. Unfortunately on Friday night our car was broken into and I had to deal with that in the middle of the night. I don't blame it on the hotel as it could have happened any where.

The Ramada was ok. I do think the location of the Ramada is great for the race. It's on the run course and it's a short walk to the swim start and the finish line. It's a bit longer walk to transition maybe ~1mile. Next door to the Ramada is a small Italian restaurant and a couple of "gentlemen's" clubs if you are into that kind of thing. Oh one big drawback with the Ramada is that it's very close to the train tracks and the train seemed to run all night with full horn blaring. We got ear plugs for Saturday night and slept fine.

Thanks for the great feedback!

I am definitely going to look into the mariott. My only concern with that is the $28 daily parking fee.

Did anyone by the prep-apid $10 permits this year at the expo for race day? Was it worth it?

Also another question, Does anyone out there have experience with the August Homewood Suites. It is a Hilton property and we are HHonors members. I was hoping Downtown augusta had a Hilton but they didn't but I loved the appeal of this hotel having a full kitchen for race weekend. I just wanted to check and see if anyone use them for the race this year. We are not opposed to staying out of downtown if it works better in our situation.

Thanks again for all of your help. We are just trying to plan ahead.

I don't know anything specifically about that hotel, but we stayed off the Washington Road exit off I-20 and were about 5 miles from downtown Augusta and we had no problems getting where we needed to go.  We parked across the street from the Marriott to get my race packet without a problem and race morning we left the hotel around 5:15am and were in the (free) parking lot next to transition by 5:30am.  I am sure it is convenient to be in the host hotel, but definitely not necessary.  Parking was free at our hotel, too!

I'll third the claim that the Ramada was "okay". The location was great as far as being close to the race (and we didn't have any problems with break ins) but the hotel wasn't that impressive.

I know this is about the hotels which sounds like reserving a room asap may also be important, but how quickly does the race fill up if anyone has a clue? First race isn't until this weekend but as already planning on trying to do a half late 2010. I'd like ot make sure I can get in if I want to do it but also don't want to put out the money a year in advance if I am not 100% sure i want to keep doing it.. (I'm only 99.99999999999% sure I"ll keep doig this)

We have already made out hotel reservations just in case. Luckily with most hotels you only need a credit card on file to reserve the room and you wont have to pay until check in. So go ahead and get your hotel now for the piece of mind. You can always cancel it later.

As for us, We bit the bullet and registered for 2010 Augusta last night. So here is two more for some fun!

I stayed at the Best Western Garden City Inn on Center West Parkway.  It was recommended on the website.  I really liked it!  It is just off of I-20, Exit 199.  Very easy to find and total 5 miles to the Marriott (packet pickup).  Saturday I was able to park on the street and walk a couple of blocks to packet pickup.

It is a straight shot down Washington Rd (GA-28).  I also went ahead and bought the $10 parking pass for raceday.  It was in the "Golf Lot" right next to the Marriott.  Right next to the finish.

It would have been ideal but I left my car key in the bike bag!  I had to ride the bus back to transition, get my bike and bike back to my car!  I will have friends (specators) for next year!

We stayed at the Laquinta off Washington rd. It was easy to get from there to the race. The hotel was a dump. It was safe enough just old and to many issues to list. I have stayed at many other Laquintas this one is way below the normal standards. I agree the Marritott would be choice #1. Any nicer hotel on Washington rd would be a fine second choice. We had parking pass for the swim start. It worked out well for us, peace of mind. But there was lots of free parking around.

Rates are in the computer for the Marriott.  $139/night plus $5/night parking.  I believe this applies to the main hotel as well as the Suites.

I did not get a reservation because I had thought about staying at my parents house.  I stayed at the Knights Inn off of the Interstate and Washington about 6 miles from downtown.  I paid $41 INCLUDING tax.  I have stayed at nicer places, but all I did was sleep and shower there anyway.
