Total Time = 1h 19m 28s
Overall Rank = 22/174
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 3/11
Pre-race routine:

Not much here, got up early, had my bagel and banana. Then I loaded up the car and drove the 1 hour to the race. Had plenty of time to set up transition and check in.
Event warmup:

A few laps in the diving well to warm up for the pool swim, nothing else.

  • 500 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards

Haven't swam much in the last two months so this time dropped from the time I got at this same event last April. I went out a little harder than I should have and I could feel it toward the end of the swim. I estimated my time at 8:30, so I'm not to dissapointed.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more, it was tough because the local pool was closed, but I'm enrolled in a masters class coming up so I can building my swim speed/endurance
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s

No wet suit to remove. Most of the time was spent running from the pool outside to the transition area. I did put on my Garmin watch which added some time. Seems like a pretty quick transition when compared to other races.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe try keeping shoes clipped into bike and getting into them while biking...something to work into the routine during the off season maybe

A storm front was moving through with strong wind being the largest part of it. Wind was picking up and gusting creating a nasty crosswind/headwind throughout areas of the course. I definitely improved on the bike over my last time on this course in April even given the wind.
What would you do differently?:

Keep building bike speed. It would be nice to see an average of over 20 mph next time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s

I think this is a fast time considering I put on my running shoes AND socks! Besides that I grabbed my race number belt and clipped in on while running out of T.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, I can't see much more time coming off of this without running without socks
  • 25m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile

It was unseasonably warm, probably about 72 when I ran. I was a bit warm and dumped water on my head in each water station, only taking a sip once. Running has always been my weakness and I am building on this. Looking at my run splits I kept my pace around 8min/mi or faster for the entire run. The course is a little long, my Garmin paced it at closer to 3.35 mi. At that distance my average pace is around 7:41min/mi.
What would you do differently?:

Keep building run endurance! This is still my weakest discipline but I plan to put a lot of miles in during the off season and come out strong. I also have a few 5k road races coming up to try and build some speed at the seasons end.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, ate some fruit and drank a cup of water. Waited for my friend to come in.

Event comments:

Great event that is always well organized and welcomes beginners and veterans alike. I like that the triathlon is done in waves, it keeps the smaller course less crowded and makes it more of a me vs me game as opposed to racing other people.
This is my first time placing in my age group since starting to TRI and it was a great way to end my first season of triathlons!
