Bumpass, Virginia
United States
Set-Up Inc.
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 27m 30s
Overall Rank = 158/317
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 20/36
Pre-race routine:

Left at 6:45, had Apple, Banana, Clif Bar, a few raisins & mango slices, cup coffee, arrived 8:15. Hydrated w/ 20oz water once I got there.
Event warmup:

10 min. run, 10 min. bike, 10 min. swim.
Swim
  • 17m 58s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was closer up at the start, got a taste of the scrum. Handled it OK, did some drafting. The walk over the sand bar was annoying. Sun made sighting difficult on the return. Personal best by 45 seconds (amazing how that wetsuit lifts your legs up).
What would you do differently?:

Get some darker goggles (amber not enough), keep practicing sighting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Ran right to my TA, a little trouble getting the suit of (balancing while standing on neoprene). Felt good otherwise. 8th/36 in AG., 54th overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 39m 11s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Running into and out of T1 pushed up my HR to 193 (yikes!) Decided to ease up and hydrate, started hammering within a minute after HR dropped to 185. (Avg. HR was 179). (Avg. cadence 93, max was 110). Pushed hard since it was such a short course. Felt good overall, felt a lot better after a few gulps from the bottle. Did a good job pacing between hammering and easing up for a drink.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Did well with a good racking. Made the mistake of jamming left foot into shoe (rather than using fingers to "horn" it in), heel caught and had to stop and fix. 16th/35 in AG, 160 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on balance while getting shoes on: don't try to jam in the foot.
Run
  • 27m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not like the trail running: had to focus on not twisting an ankle. Wasn't until I got to the gravel that I was able to get into a faster pace. Run was tough after the swim and hammering on the bike. Hard to concentrate. Gave it all: legs were noodles at the finish (guess I gave it all :-)
What would you do differently?:

Not sure: it was not an easy course.
Post race
Warm down:

Brunswick stew (YUM!), Gatorade, banana.

Event comments:

Setup does a great job, given this is not an easy venue to have a race. I can live with the trail run -- it's better than last year when they had crowded both the bike and run on the same road. Sand bar was a bummer, but it was still a beautiful day.

Great job!!!  Yeah the sandbar was a disaster (Greg-RD-even was joking about it between the start of 2nd and 3rd wave).  The run through the woods was tough too---got pretty crowded so not much if any passing going on there...but as you said it's a great venue and fun race for the end of the VA season!!!

Nice race, sandbar flipped me out, was not ready for that at all.
