Swim
Comments: First 350 was better than I expected, not sure of time but felt effortless. After that I dogpaddled, breast stroked and back floated for rest of swim. Heart rate maxed and I never recovered for the rest of the race. What would you do differently?: Stop and float until I calmed down. I thought my overall swim time was going to be over 25 minutes. My time was very good considering second half of swim but maxing out killed my bike and run. Transition 1
Comments: Dizzy and relieved to get out of the water but my energy level was gone. What would you do differently?: I put my helmet on before my shirt and that cost some time. Overall, not bad considering I felt lucky to be alive. Bike
Comments: I was disappointed on the bike because I had zero energy after the swim. Never pushed hard at all because I felt close to bonking. Starting in the back waves meant I had to pass many slower cyclists which was very frustrating as most rode to the center of the road. Not passed by one person during entire ride which gave me a false sense of speed even though deep down I knew I was slow. What would you do differently?: I need to be more fresh when getting on the bike from the swim and a 20 mph pace would be doable. Transition 2
Comments: Just going through the motions at this point as I had nothing left. What would you do differently?: It all comes back to freaking out in the second half of the swim. Too much heartrate and adrenalin and never recovered. Run
Comments: No energy, side stitch and hamstring cramp. Walked 200 yards. What would you do differently?: Swim better Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Dogpaddling the second half of the swim, may have set a new world record for 350 meters. Event comments: The race was very well organized but no penalties were given for drafting when I heard of people being scolded by the draft marshalls and bragging about it. What's the deal, if you cheat you should pay the price, especially when you get caught. Very good experience for my first tri. Last updated: 2009-10-01 12:00 AM
