Subject: gas for the chain
I am a slightly ocd personality who has been trying to clean all the grease/grit out of my chain with dawn and a lot of scrubbing. There always seems to be grease that works it's way out of the chain after I put the chain back on and it drives me crazy! A friend of mine told me to us gasoline to scrub the chain, and it would take everything out. Would anyone recomend this method of cleaning?

Don't use gas, gas in not nice.  There are other more enviro-friendly degreasers on the market.  Some of the roadies I know take off the chain and soak it in an old plastic bottle. With the cap on you shake the chain around and help knock of the old grease. Rinse and hang to dry, then reinstall on the bike and lube lightly.

OK first you are NEVER going to get all the grease out of the chain. Why would you want to? You are just going to turn around and re-lube it.

Here's the sure-fire method for getting your chain as clean as it can get.
  1. remove chain from bike (easier if you have a powerlink installed)
  2. drop chain into empty, clean gatorade bottle or similar plastic bottle with wide mouth
  3. add enough orange cleaner, 409, simple green, or whatever de-greaser you prefer to cover the chain (I can't reccommend gasoline, because it's pretty dangerous to work with)
  4. secure lid on bottle
  5. shake vigorously for about 3 minutes
  6. remove chain from bottle (this is where you are glad you used a wide-mouth bottle)
  7. rinse chain with clear water
  8. wipe chain dry
  9. spray with wd-40
  10. wipe again
  11. reinstall chain
  12. lube properly with real chain lube not wd-40
