Subject: RE: gas for the chain OK first you are NEVER going to get all the grease out of the chain. Why would you want to? You are just going to turn around and re-lube it. Here's the sure-fire method for getting your chain as clean as it can get. - remove chain from bike (easier if you have a powerlink installed)
- drop chain into empty, clean gatorade bottle or similar plastic bottle with wide mouth
- add enough orange cleaner, 409, simple green, or whatever de-greaser you prefer to cover the chain (I can't reccommend gasoline, because it's pretty dangerous to work with)
- secure lid on bottle
- shake vigorously for about 3 minutes
- remove chain from bottle (this is where you are glad you used a wide-mouth bottle)
- rinse chain with clear water
- wipe chain dry
- spray with wd-40
- wipe again
- reinstall chain
- lube properly with real chain lube not wd-40
