Just signed up for my first 70.3!!!   Only started racing in 2008 and have done many sprints and an olympic.  Any advice specific to a first 70.3 in August?  Any advice from those of you that have already done this Timberman half.  All insight is truly appreciated...........

My adrenaline is pumping just reading your review.............pristine/clear water.....I can't wait!!!!Although that rolling downward decline of 50 mph gives me some concern...........think my brakes and I will be having some discussion over that one...lol........     Is it really that steep.......espcially for a first timer????    I would really like to finish this race with my seat behind my aerobars if you know what I mean.     Really haven't personally pushed 40 mpg   and that was big for me.......so  50 is a whole different level.     Is there a warning to this decline or does it jst come and g et  you and then its tooo late.........any safe feedback on this hill is truly appreciated cause I plan to finish this race and walking back to car     and then to celebate

Make sure you book your hotel reservations early. I didn't, and wound up camping, (by myself), which was like doing an endurance event before the race even started! The race is awesome! Enjoy your first 70.3...as they say, "you never forget your first!"

This will be my first HIM as well!  I'm staying at the Hampton Inn in Tilton.  It was the closest one I could find to the race.  Most of the other Inns on the Timberman website seem to already be booked.  I think this hotel is about 30 minutes from the race...

I did my first 70.3 after only six months of training.  Best advice I can offer is: Stay within yourself for the entire Swim, Bike, and 10 miles of the run.  If at mile 10 of the run you still feel like a million bucks, then lay down a wicked 5k.  However, chances are you will be in survival mode by then.    But seriously, stay aerobic at all cost; do not go anaerobic.  Do not "hammer" at any point.  Spin the uphills, recover on the downhills.  Regardless of what time you finish, it will be a Personal Best Time because it is your first.

ENJOY YOUR FIRST.  Soak it in.  Enjoy the day.  Don't worry about time.  Just keep moving forward.

Get a HIM Plan, trust it, follow it.  If you miss a workout here and there no biggie; Rest is an important component of training.

Get a hotel the first time around and then camp the following year.  You'll know why after. First time around, a hotel is worth the money.  Once you get a bunch of things figured out, then you can save a lot of money and camp out.  Initially though, you want to focus on your Race and Prep for the Race; not the logistics and other things that go along with camping. Just my two Lincolns

Two practical hints from a volunteer:
1.  DON'T speed when you drive the bike course the night before (local yocal was pulling cars over on the part before the turn around and making his year's worth of quotas - not us, but guy infront of us among others we heard about).
2.   Take am traffic warning seriously - you will sit in line waiting to park for a good hour - and that's if you follow their advice and get there at 4am.   It got worse the later you waited, even until the race started as spectators were thinking they'd still get a spot with in walking distance of the transition area.   Encourage your fans to use their shuttle service, or better yet - have them sign up to volunteer!!!
