Watching the event live, several commentators mentioned that a bunch of pro's were not wearing aero helmets...why? Temperature in Hawaii? Do aero helmets make you ride at a higher temp vs a "regular" helmet with the airflow grooves?

There's so much talk about how aerohelmets are among the highest "bang for your buck" speed increasers. I would think that a few minutes saved would be welcome. A few minutes was the difference during Kona...

Anyways, it was on my mind and wanted to see what you ppl had to say.

Thanks!

CAN be, that's the key here.

Holding your head in the optimal position for 112 miles will take some serious commitment to form though.

As far as the Heat issue goes, Imho at "Pro" speeds, the lack of vents won't mean squat.

I like mine because of the odd looks you get

The commentators mentioned that the pros that went without the aero helmets felt they would cut more time by allowing the heat to escape easier  and keeping their body temps lower.  That way they would physically be ahead of the competition and be able to push harder than they could at a higher body temp.

some of the more knowledgeable people can answer but from research i have done:

1)  aero helmet will work only if you have the right form

- several BTers tested them in wind tunnels and actually created more drag with the aero helmet vs regular helmet

2) heat is not really an issue

from this years kona most of the top men were wearing them from what i have seen.
