Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6am and looked out the window to watch a nice little Nor'easter howling outside. Paced around the house deciding if I was gonna drag my lazy arse out into the 25-35mph winds and 39 degree rain until finally the entrance fee made my decision for me(not gonna lie, would have gone back to bed if I hadn't paid for it).
Event warmup:

Nothing, just wandered around until the race started.
Run
  • 14m 1s
  • 1.8 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Running through the trails was pretty cool as I've never done it before and it kept the wind down quite a bit. This is a crazy good time for me which is most definitely from my inability to pace myself when I'm not on a treadmill. Fortunatley, there were much faster people around me who pulled me along for the short run.
What would you do differently?:

nada
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

As I mentioned, there were no transition splits so this is my unofficial time.

This is my first race so I took my time and fumbled through my stuff deciding if I was gonna keep the glasses on and tried to get on a pair of gloves but my hands were too wet. As it turns out, all I took was my helmet so I wasted alot of time but it was all good.
What would you do differently?:

have a better game plan going in
Bike
  • 40m 51s
  • 11 miles
  • 16.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Did I mention there was a Nor'Easter? This course was 3 loops along the Great South Bay and it's always windy there but.....The roads were very wet(it was raining pretty good) and it was REALLY windy for me, didn't seem to bother some of the Elite's as they flew by me. I passed alot more than passed me and average speed is really low but I'm happy with the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothin, it was alot of fun.
Transition 2
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

Ok, this really shoulda been alot faster but I took my time, drank some water and BS'd for a minute with some guy who looked more relaxed than me....then I realized he was done!!!
What would you do differently?:

I'm cool with it, like I said this was my first race and I was taking it all in.
Run
  • 16m 10s
  • 1.8 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Ahhh now we're back to my normal run pace!!! So this was the second time through the woods on the same trail and the runners/weather really took it's toll on the trail. When I got home, my wife wouldn't let me bring my shoes in the house.
What would you do differently?:

nothin, this is where I'm at.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a couple of cups of hot soup at the race tent(so good!!), went home to see the family(unfortunately they stayed home cause the weather), made some Chili and watched Mark Sanchez and the Jets continue their downward spiral after a promising start to the year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothin, performed as well as I could for the conditions.

Great race! Way to tough out the conditions - that makes you better than me. I had the same little conversation with myself at about 6am but ended up with the opposite decision.

Thanks...I couldn't believe there were people actually doing race day registration in that weather.
