Some of you may have seen my posts around here. However, I also work as an editor for a company that produces news sites for about 70 television stations around the country.

We're working on some features about heart health, and I'm looking for people who have overcome serious heart problems (heart attacks, surgery, advanced disease, etc.) who have gone on to compete in triathlons.

Does not matter if you were in our sport before your health issues as well.

If you fit the description -- or know someone who does -- please let me know here. (Or email abrooks [at] ibsys [dot] com)

I had a heart attack August 10th 2008. I was bodybuilder for years and always working out, that summer I was training for a duathlon. I never did triathlons before. I did my first sprint tri April 2009 followed by two in August and one in September, all where sprints. Next season I want to do an Olympic and the following year a half ironman.

Nothing at all serious compared to others for me.  But I was recently diagnosed with atrial fibrilation and have to take drugs for it.

I had 4 stents put in three arteries being 100%, 90 and 80% blocked in Oct/Nov of '08. Took two stents to open the one. Started eating better, ect and in Feb 09 decided that a triathlon would be a great idea. I lost 50 lbs from Jan to Aug and did my first tri in Sept 09 in under 2 hr, could have been fast but I talked to my wife and kids and didn't push it in transition either. Now, I'm training for my first 1/2 mary in Jan '10. I feel great. Was able to get off of the blood pressure meds shortly after beginning work outs. Feel free to contact me if want to know more. Have a great time !!!!

I had a stent in November '06 and a replacement ascending aorta in March '08. There are others like me (including Boston Marathon qualifiers, time trialers, several 140.6 Ironmen) at cardiacathletes.org.

I met a woman this summer that had a heart transplant who did Trek Woman's Tri in Mt. Snow Vermont. She lives in Yonkers, NY. I wish I could remember her name.

I saw an article about a guy who was a heart transplant recipient and who intended to do the Hawaii Ironman this past October.

I wonder how he's doing?  Anti-rejection meds (aka, immunosuppresants) compromise immune system functioning.  And, a race such as an IM is inherently immunocompromising, let alone being grueling on the cardiovascular system.

Look into Emma Carney the Australian triathlete who used to compete at the elite level until a life threatening heart condition intervened. She continues to compete now at an age group level. She recently competed in her age group at the Noosa Triathlon, coincidentally the record she set for the course pre-heart issues still stands.

I had a triple bypass in April 2005. I trained and ran the Seattle Marathon in November 2005, seven months and two days after surgery. I got into tri's after that as a way to encourage and motivate other heart patients and have completed the following:

2-IM(CDA), 2-HIM, 2-Olympic, 6-Sprint, 3-Marathons, 2-Half-Marathons, and a handful of other races. On 11/15 I turned fifty and celebrated by swimming 50 minutes in Kailua Bay, riding 50 miles on the Queen K hwy. and running 50 minutes from the Natural Energy Lab into Kona, HI. the site of the Ironman World Championship.

I volunteer weekly at my local hospital (PeaceHealth at Riverbend) in Eugene, and am working toward becoming a Certified Personal Trainer and a motivational speaker. While here in Hawaii I will be speaking at the Straub Medical Center in Honolulu on 11/19.

My father died of heart disease at forty-six years-old, the age I was when I finished the Seattle Marathon. Because of the advances in medicine I was given the chance my father never had and I'm trying to make the most of it.

Also as a side note, some here have referenced the heart transplant patient trying to complete an IM. He was 8 seconds past the swim cutoff exiting the water, therefore not allowed to continue racing. Only 8 seconds.

Congrats to you, Jeff.  As for the heart transplant guy.....what a shame.....8 seconds!  It is indeed brutal.
