Subject: Spin bike care question...

I own a Spin bike since a couple of weeks. My dealer told me to to lube the flywheel with TFL50 lube. I Have Jig-a-loo and WD-40 at home. Would it do the job without damaging the brake pads or the wheel ?

thanks in advance !

Christian.

What brand of indoor bike is it? It should come with written maintenance instructions rather than just the dealer telling you what to do.

Many indoor cycling bikes (including Spinner(R) bikes) have flywheels that you should NOT lube. Grease on the wheel interferes with the resistance and braking mechanism.

If it's the kind of flywheel that has a belt or chain directly on it (not on the hub, but ON the wheel), then yes, it will need lube, and I assume WD40 would work okay. I have no experience with lubing an indoor bike chain with WD40, though. Done it when there was nothing else to use on my road bike chain, and it seemed fine, although it seemed to get "stickier" and attract dirt faster than higher-quality, bike-chain-specific lube.

Thank you for your answer !

It is a Louis Garneau Adrenalyne. Entry Level... Flywheel with braking pads on the side.  Idid not see anything about lubing the flywheel un the owner's guide. You may be right...

My point is about lubing the interface between the flywheel and the brake pads when you begin to hear a sound ('iiiiiiiiiii") at a certain tension. Lubing the wheel stops this annoying sound. They often do that with Pledge or something like that in spinning classes... I want to be sure though that I do not damage anything before putting some chemicals on my new indoors bike...

Ah yes, you will want to POLISH the flywheel, but not lube it.

You put the money in the bike ... definitely use a high-quality polish (Sunlite comes to mind, SPINTech is the Spinning brand). Polish the flywheel well with a soft polishing cloth and the polish, and that should take care of the weird sound ...
