My triathlon life is crashing down at this moment! I found out last week that I have severe arthritis in my hip and have been told to pretty much stop running or my hip will need to be replaced before I am 50! I am 42 and in great shape. I just completed Ironman Couer d'Alene this past June and was on top of the world! Any thoughts? I am getting a joint injection next week and am struggling with how this is going to impact my life. Good thing is I wasnt planning on an Ironman in 2010, but I do have one in my sights for 2011! Any words of wisdonm or advice would be helpful...

First off, get more than one opinion. Get a COUPLE of opinions, at least, and make sure they are from A) sports orthopedists and B)sports orthopedists who specialize in hips.

Then, see if there are OTC options or prescription options to control it...and failing that, possibly surgical ones.

Then, if and when you DO run, minimize the impact--pool run, and do as much as your land running as you can on soft ground--grass, trails, tracks, TMs, etc. Finally, cut back. it may be that you cannot do marathon distance safely...then reduce your distance, and enjoy the extra free time ;-)

Thx for the words of wisdom. I have been trying to control the pain with OTC meds per drs instructions and its not working, therefore I am going to get the joint injection. My Dr is a Sports med dr and does specialize in hips, but I am now going for a second opinion. I going to see one of the top drs at Sinai in Baltimore who specializes in hips. I just blown away by this news. I never would have thunk that my body would begin to break after all I do to keep myself in good shape... I still see an Ironman in my future, 2011. It may not be as fast as my last, but all i need to do is swim a 1:15, bike a 5:45, and finish the run in 10hrs to get to the finish...HAHAHA

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of my left hip a couple of years ago. I continued to do tri's and saw a number of specialists but the pain only got worse. I had a type of hip replacement called a 'resurfacing' in Feb 2008 and completed IM Western Australia 10 months later. I have been pain-free and able to run as long as I want. If you have not checked this out, here is a link: www.surfacehippyinfo.com.

This was a lifesaver for me. Maybe it can work for you too. Note - this is a relatively new technique in the US though it's been done in Europe and India for years. If you choose to have this surgery, it is vital that you use a doc with a lot of experience in resurfacings - at least 500.

Best of luck,
Bill
