Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

The night before, calcium/magnesium tabs, the morning of, 3 endurloytes and a salt tab. Water and Ensure. Coffee.
Event warmup:

Walked my bike and stuff from parking to transition. Swam a little.
Swim
  • 34m 41s
  • 1650 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Easy swim. Lots of open water and easy sighting the riverbank while breathing right. Unfortunately, I didn't use my prescription goggles so I couldn't see anything to sight on ahead of me. I swam to the left of the course where a boat asked me if I was okay. I told him I was and tried to sight for the exit. Hmmm, nothing like a bit of a triangle in an otherwise straight course. Otherwise, no problems.
What would you do differently?:

Wear prescription goggles and try to swim in more of a straight line.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Straightforward transition
Bike
  • 1h 31m 59s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 16.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Some headwind/tailwind going on. Tried to just keep it comfortable/easy since I knew I had a 10K run following this. I was surprised at how slow my pace was, but I wanted to keep it comfortable for my first oly. At about mile 21 I was really ready to get off of the bike. My arms and butt hurt and I was pretty fidgety.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Gotta start somewhere!
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Assed around too much here. My husband was just outside of transition and I found myself talking to him a little more than being strictly on task. But it still would have been slow since I put on socks for my run.
What would you do differently?:

Ignore hubby? I don't think so!
Run
  • 58m 42s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I started the run just trying to stay in a comfy/aerobic pace since this is only the 2nd 10K I've done and the first after a swim and bike. At the first mile, I took a gel with water, and I knew it was a hard day when I passed my BIL at mile 2, walking. In fact, passed lots of folks, even at this slow pace. I think the humidity caught up with us all.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running in a sauna? I don't think I made any mistakes that led to my slow run, I think the first humid run of the summer is always tough.
Post race
Warm down:

Water!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The first time at this distance.

Event comments:

A very well run race and perfect for my first Oly. While I didn't make my pre-race time goal, I was able to keep moving for 3 hours and eight minutes, nonstop, that really all there is to this tri business.

Great job! This is only your 2nd 10k ever and you kept a 9.xx pace? Excellent!

I hear you on the sighting issues. I wear contacts, and so far I've just been wearing them along with regular goggles. Occasionally they leak but I haven't lost a contact yet.

Another great race!

You are very wise not to ignore your support crew (husband). Let me tell you that my wife is my biggest fan. She is so supportive.

What's next?

Thanks, guys! I generally have a pretty wimpy bike leg, but this was wimpier than expected. My run also fell apart a little bit on me, but in general, I'm really pleased because I don't think I could have done much of anything different. The second place finisher finished 8 minutes ahead of me so I just need to keep working on the engine, as they say.
