WASHINGTON -- A House subcommittee has approved legislation aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4727426

I don't know much about antitrust laws, etc., which probably has something to do with this...

I hate the BCS and I think it's a terrible system, and I wish there was a college football playoff.  But... I think that Congress getting involved and trying to pass laws to force a college football playoff?  I know that this idea has been bandied about before, but is the first time I remember reading that anything has gone this far.

Seems like a terrible idea.  Seems like something the government ought not to poke their nose into.

I think in questions formed in sentence fragments.

add "is ridiculous" or something like that to the end, and remove the question mark.

While I think that this is not something that the federal government has any right to legislate on, trying to find a brightside, maybe they will waste hours/days/weeks even, on this, and will not have time to further damage our country legistlating real issues.

Does Congress/Senate get paid for every dumb subcommittee they form?  Maybe that is why there are so rich?

I doubt it, this guy's been on a crusade since Texas got screwed last season. I don't know if he's a rabid UT alum or what, but he's been going after the BcS for a full year now. I'm not saying he'll accomplish anything, but he's definitely putting in more than a token effort.

Plenty of bills that have become laws eventually, have started as token efforts.

You know, maybe if they fix the BCS they'll be able to fix the Detroit Lions next. That would make them the most successful Congress in 50 years.

And yet they continue to be re-elected by their districts/constituents.  It's because they pander to the soccer moms and football dads so that they can point to all the "good" that they are doing and hopefully get the dumb masses at home to ignore the liberties that are being taken away.

(Did I just let my cynicism out?)

With any luck the threat of government regulation might serve as a scare-tactic and induce the BCS to reform on their own terms.

I still haven't figured out how Texas got "screwed." There was a 3-way tie in the south, they lost the tie breaker. Oklahoma went on to win the Big 12, yet somehow Texas should have went to the title game? By the Big 12 rules, they weren't the best team in the conference, yet they deserve to go to the title game over the conference champion?
