Pre-race routine:

The race was about 2.5 hr from home, so I spent the night in a hotel near the race. I got the last room they had and it was a smoking room. That room smelled terrible! Woke up and drove to race. Got there at 6:15. Ate a Ciff Bar and banana while setting up my transition area.
Swim
  • 13m 22s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim ruined my day, it just killed me. I don't know what happened. I positioned myself in the middle of the group before the start. The water was cold, but it was not that cold. From the start, I could not get in a rhythm. I was breathing on every stroke, when I usually breathe every 3rd. I just could not slow my breathing down and focus. Finally as I was approching the final bouy I found my rhythm and the last 200 was ok. The first 400 was a nightmare! At one point I did the back stroke trying to slow down. I bet my HR was in the 180s by the end of the swim!
What would you do differently?:

Calm down!
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

I was drained by the time I got to T1. The swim just killed me (did I say that already?). Did a great job of putting on my socks, helmet, glasses. Then I unracked my bike and remembered that I did not have my shoes on. Had to re-rack and put on my damn shoes. Then re-unracked my bike and headed out. HR probably stillin the 180s.
What would you do differently?:

Put shoes on before I get my bike.
Bike
  • 38m 2s
  • 11.6 miles
  • 18.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I struggeled until mile 4. I just could not get the swim out of my mind. My HR was still astronomical. Finally I was able to calm myself down and put the swim away. Whats done is done. The last half of the ride was moderately comfortable at 21+ mph. But too little, too late.
What would you do differently?:

Swim better.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Smooth transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 43s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Not pleased with run either. I am still blaming everything on the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim better.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and sulked. Met Bethany and Crispin. They both finished with outstanding times!

I think it's really cool that you can swim AND bike AND run.  I mean, sure the swim sucks.  But you can do all THREE.  You rock!

I thought I had a good swim and your bad swim was faster. I usually feel good swimming but since my first tri was cancelled (John Tanner) I think that even I was a little apprehensive just prior to the swim start but once I started I was fine. Great overall race because you seem to have a good balance of all 3 sports plus good transitions. Hope to meet up with everyone I missed this race, at the next race I do which may be Indian Springs. Is this one on your schedule?

James, great race and that was an awesome 5k to finish strong.  If you're doing the entire tri the parks series, then I'll see you at the Indian Springs race at the end of the month.

Congrats!

James,

It was great to meet you! How random to run with you a bit on the course.

You had a good race; don't beat yourself up about it. That swim killed just about everyone!

I'll see you in a few weeks,
Bethany

Good race, JR.  Sounds like the water was brutal for you all.  Top half of the AG, that's always a good feeling!
