wow, excellent exercise.

what's most interesting to me is the condemnation - or not - of George varies so wildly. either we think our friends should mind their own business and let us live our lives, or we count on our friends to pull us back from the brink from time to time. i tend toward the latter.

so:
1. captain - just ick. & 2. dawn - pathetic and ick.
then
3. george - some friend.
then
4. ralph - goober. & 5 tom. can't really say either is "despicable" for chosing whom to love, or not. this is one of the most complicated things in life (unlike say, "gee, should i barter for sex?" - that one's pretty clear to me.) tom could choose to forgive, which i would respect just as much, or he could say "hey, i've got a girlfriend with some serious judgment flaws here, and this isn't going to change, so i need to end it here," which i also respect. it's his choice.

Heres my list from most dispicable to least.

1. Dawn - Took the easy way out. Everything is negotiable or
2. Ralph - Predator took advantage of a bad situation, and someone in need at the moment.
3. Captain - An opportunistic Business man. Lonely and Dark.
4. George - A Spinless friend who refused to give an opinion that could have saved a relationship.
5. TOM - Lease dispicable, If someone is willing to stoop that low and take the easy route the the relationship wasn't meant to be. The only character who didn't lean on his morals in this short story.

All right I am a little late on this but here is my opinion.  The definition of dispicable is "morally reprehensible"   Based upon this definition Dawn would be the most dispicable..i.e. her morals for sleeping with the captain equates her to being a prostitute.  George would be the second most dispicable - As a friend it could be argued (and I would argue this) that he had a duty to at least help Dawn in her decision and steer her away from the morally reprehensible action.  Number 3 would be the captain.  Although he provided a service for his payment - such service was moraly wrong.  I know that in my profession if I slept with a client for payment I would be disbarred.  Tom did nothing morally wrong in my opinion nor did Ralph.  In fact Tom stood by his morals and Ralph followed his heart.."he fell instantly in love with her"  Thus the order would be  from worst to best.....Dawn, George, Captain, Tom, Ralph.  So there you have the correct answer.
