Subject: 9 speed to 10 speed conversion
I currently have a road bike with a 9-speed rear cassette. I am building a triathlon framed bike and I want it to have a 10-speed cassette. I want to use my current wheel set with both bikes. So my questions are: How hard is it to change cassettes outs if I am swapping the wheels back and forth? Would it make sense to switch my road bike to a 10-speed and what components would I have to switch out if I wanted to do that. I currently have all Shimano ultegra components. This is my first time building a bike and because of budget I can only get a few parts at a time, but I would like to get the triathlon bike up and running. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Leave your current bike 9 speed. WAY too expensive to change to 10 speed. You can simply swap casettes when you change wheels. They're both compatible. You may have different spacing and need a small thin spacer for the 10, but otherwise, smply swap and ride either bike.

If you're worried about wheel costs, probikekit.com have Mavic Aksium wheels on sale for a idiculous low price today. Decent enough wheel and for the price, can't be beat.

Your wheels will work with both 9 and 10 speed cassettes, however there is a spacer that is required behind a 10 speed cassette.

Switching a cassette is a less than five minute job if you have a chain whip, cassette tool and vicegrips.

If you want to convert your road bike to a 10 speed, you would need to replace the chain, cassette and STI's.

If you are constrained by budget and want to be able to swap wheels without changing cassettes, I would suggest going 9 speed with the tribike.

Thanks.    Until I can afford a new wheelset,  It sounds like swapping cassettes will be easy enough and I already have the spacer.  I have thought about building the triathlon bike as a 9-speed, but also thought it would be nice to have a 10-speed for some of the hills I ride around here.

A ten speed cassette doesn't necessarily give you extra gearing, that depends on the cassette that you are running.  If you are running out of gear, then look at your cassette and get one with a bigger big cog.  The common cassette sizes are available in both 9 and 10 speed (and going backward, in 8, 7, ...) they just have an extra cog in the mix.
