Swim
Comments: I had a hard time at the start. Swimming is my strongest leg, and I was trapped behind a lot of slower swimmers. I couldn't get any room to move and kept knocking into people and swiming over them in an attempt to break free. I finally broke free around the first turn. The straight part of the course was much better and I was able to gain some of the ground that I lost at the start. At the final turn, I got out a bit wide and when the water got too shallow, I had quite a bit of distance to run to reach the swim exit. What would you do differently?: Position myself better for the start of the swim and better sighting. Transition 1
Comments: I'm pretty happy with this transition time, but I should be able to move a bit quicker next time. I hesitated a little too much while trying to figure out what I was doing. Bike
Comments: I had a hard time getting my right pedal into the right place so that I could get going. Once I got up to speed, I was able to pass quite a few people on the bike. Of course, I was also passed by many from the later wave. What would you do differently?: Hit it a little harder on the flats. Transition 2
Comments: I walked across the sand from my rack to the run exit. What would you do differently?: Picked up the pace rather than taking my time. Run
Comments: I was a little worried about the run because I haven't done too much running due to shin splints. My running has mainly been on the elliptical machine or in the pool. The first mile was a little hard, but I was able to settle into a grove. I was pleased that I ran the majority of the race. Unfortunately, it seemed that everyone that I passed on the bike passed me on the run. When I saw the finish, I sprinted through the last bit. The guy working the clock commented on how strong I finished. Now, if the rest of my run could be that strong. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: walk around race site, grab some food, and after the awards cermony, we drove home. Event comments: Given that this was my first triathlon, I'm very happy with my results. This is a great race and I would consider doing it again next year. Last updated: 2005-05-16 12:00 AM

Deger and I had breakfast, loaded the bikes on the back of the car. Jen followed us down to the race. At the race, I found my rack location, laid everything out, and talked with some of my fellow Team in Training participants. The water temperature was 83 degrees so no wet suit. Just before the race, I had a carb-boom and half of a cliff bar.
