I've unfriended people who I never hear from - or who annoy me with their constant and totally uninteresting status updates. (I think that some people have unfriended me for this reason - I treat it like twitter sometimes.... *sheepish look*

I do go through on a regular basis and clean out my friends list - no point having people on there that I don't stay in touch with.  What's funny is that I have people on my friend list who I've met on-line that I "talk" to more often than some of my "friends".

I "blocked" my ex because I wasn't quite ready to date yet and I was tired of all his very inappropriate photos and status updates that made me feel like crap.  I have a pile of people on my "block" list tho.

itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-02-09 7:45 AM I have unfriended for two reasons:

can't take the tone of their posts (they differ widely from me politically, religiously, morally)

This.

me too. I do this for fun not to hear rants.

so if we "unfriend" someone do they get a notice?  I once got an email from someone (who I still don't know) that said, "hey, why did you unfriend me?  Was it about that one post (yada yada yada)? "  I thought it was hilarious, as I really had no clue who she was.

I got unfriended when a married couple split, she unfriended everyone.  I actually like her better and had always been friends of the couple.  I have unfriended people, one person twice.  I let her be friends, but she kept replying to my posts like she was a bff, but she was not. I chalked it up to the fact that at the time she was getting divorced and was reaching out.  So I unfriended her.  Then she friended me a few months ago and in a moment of weakness I accepted.  She did the same things so I unfriended her again.  Next time I will just say no.  I unfriended my mom, I decided to institute the no parents, no coworker rule and unfriended her and a coworker about a year ago.  I know I have been unfriended a few times, and I don't take it to hart.

megtrow - 2010-02-09 7:42 AM The whole "hiding" friends thing is strange to me. If I don't care enough about somebody to want to see their updates and hear what they are doing... why should I want that person to have access to my own information, photos, updates, etc? Clearly they are not a close friend. Call me paranoid, but I just see no reason to allow people I am not truly friends with to keep tabs on me. Never hidden, just deleted.

Because, to be honest, I see FB and most of it's users use it as a "look at me" and really care little about what other people are saying...

I'm probably guilty of it too.  When I first started, I tried to read up on everyone and comment.  But it starts to get so cumbersome, it sort of ended up me making some kind of status update joke and MAYBE look at what everyone said on the immediate page.  I never look at old posts any more.

When I happen to login, I'll try to make sure to Mafia help ya.
