Comments: The hydrilla (sp?) (under water plants near surface) near the first buoy was not so pleasant, but didn't phase me too much. But for some reason, I really struggled after getting through it and rounding the buoy. My HR was really high and my breathing was rapid. I tried to catch my breath by flipping on my back, but it didn't work well. I pushed on and after about 300m or so I felt better and got into somewhat of a rhythm. I was fine after that, and even passed a few people at the end. Also, this was my first wave start and it really helped reduced the congestion. What would you do differently?: Stay calm and keep breathing as steady as possible Transition 1
Comments: I had a little trouble putting my race belt on. I might should try to swim with it tucked into my shorts next time. What would you do differently?: I want to start clipping my shoes into my pedals. Bike
Comments: I was upset that my computer wasn't registering my speed. The sensor on my spoke must have twisted on the drive to the race. :( It's amazing how reliant we become on technology, huh!? I got over my anger, and just decided to ride as hard as I could. I passed a fair amount of people and that's always fun. In the end, I am really happy with 23.3 mph, ESPECIALLY considering I rode 51 miles @ 18 mph the day before the race. This was not a A priority race for me, and I'm still in base training for the PrairieMan Half on 9/11. What would you do differently?: Maybe pace myself a little better so I'd have more gas for the run! Transition 2
What would you do differently?: I need to stop sitting down to put on my shoes! Run
Comments: MAN...I was hurrrrrting. I got a side cramp after about a half mile, and it lasted for a good 10 minutes or so. Ouch! Plus, I was getting passed left and right, and most of those people were in my AG. So demoralizing, after passing so many on the bike. That's what I get for using all my gas early. I need to PACE better. Having said that, I'm not all that unhappy with 8:04 pace consider I haven't done any speed work in months. Hopefully, I can get closer to 7 for RiverCities in a couple of months. What would you do differently?: Pace better Post race
Warm down: Chatting with family and Dallas Athletes. Event comments: My first Ironhead race, but definitely not my last. Jack Weiss did a great job. Last updated: 2005-06-14 12:00 AM

My parents happened to be in town and were kind enough to get up at 5am along with my wife to watch me race. So I talked with them and a few other friends before the race. It was really great having them there.
