I just got into one that trains up in Lancaster which is 15 minutes north of Worcestor, but I wouldn't mind finding one in worcestor also since I commute through it.

we haven't been able to find one (we've been in Worc for 5 years) - closest are Landry's (Westboro), and Blackstone Valley Human Performance (Grafton, but really a coaching business)

We've joked about starting one.

I'd love a Worcester based team...I live out in Charlton...and training gets pretty lonely out here.

A few years ago, the Central Mass Striders (runners club) used to have a small triathlon contingent. I don't think they have it anymore. As it is, the Cyclonauts are the closest team at the moment, and they're in Springfield!  You'd think that one of the largest cities in New England (third?) would rate a tri team.

If you wanted to get something going, you may consider contacting the 3 bike shops (that I know of) in town:  Bike Alley, Fritz's, and Barney's. Ask if they'd like to sponsor a Worcester based tri team.  Take the angle that it could increase their customer base. I'd join in a heartbeat!

What kind of club you want to be. Welcoming and diverse or exclusive?
Starting a club is A LOT work and takes CASH (insurance, legal, etc).  We started Tri-New England here in Prov/Southeastern MA this past Winter and it has been awesome. Very active core membership.

Sponsorship by an active bike shop has worked out well too. In addition to the much needed cash to start and maintain a club, Providence Bike sends one of their tri guys to run a well attended weekly TT in Scituate,RI. Also, having USAT coaches as part of the leadership has significantly impacted the direction of the club and the clinics that we have been able to offer.

Another new group Buzzards Bay has started up in the Dartmouth area but I haven't really heard that much about them.

I think that welcoming and inclusive is much more what I'd want to be a part of, especially since I'm slow.  and injured.

Do you think the first step is a general interest meeting?  Then we could see who's really interested, and who has time/energy/bandwith to work on the startup tasks (looking for sponsors, investigating insurance/costs, etc).

I'm more than happy to figure out and set up a meeting, if people will help me brainstorm things like place (we could host at our house, but if we're going to advertise this in different places, I'd prefer to have it somewhere public... that might be less weird for some people anyway) and time (now-ish?  this fall after the season is done?  spring?).

Thoughts?

It is getting a little harder maintaining training by myself. Started off in the spring for some 5k's, 5 and 10 milers and a Half Marathon. My primary running partners are both injured and now that I have moved on to Tri Training it has been harder to push myself. My wife is great she will drive me to the lake watch me swim then take my wetsuit/gear home while I ride the bike home. Been swimming at Comet Pond in Hubbardston since it is really clean and is 14.6 miles away from my house. Also been swimming with a tri training group at Lake Chauncy that was setup for the Westboro Sprint although they have a coach and I am not part of the group. I just kind of meetup with some of the members early on the weekends. Much better to swim/bike with a group.

Set up a meeting, I'd be willing to help. But realize, that you're not likely to get a lot of people at a meeting, a handful at best. Folks would come once you get things set up and advertise the fact that there's a new Tri Club in Central Massachusetts. As I said in a previous post, there certainly should be a market for one in this region. I can't imagine that all of the triathletes in Massachusetts live in Western Mass or Boston.

I'm going to be training for IM USA next year, and I'm not looking forward to training on my own. I'd like nothing better than to be able to train with other triathletes.

Let's keep the ball rolling on this deal. I'm a teacher, so I've got time to devote to this type of endeavor.

I work out with a bunch of different people in the area, and just decided to create a group on facebook to make it a "little" more formal.- not quite the $$ and time required to run a group, but a little more organized than me texting people "hey u wanna ride today?"

pardon my ignorance of geography of Ma., but here is the regional link from USAT to see if any of the official clubs are close enough to you

also, I know that latching on to an established club can help with insurance obligations for smaller clubs

Seems like a few of the closer ones are not clubs per se, but nutritonists, trainers and bloggers.

Hi from Sutton, I'm new to the forum.  Monica, I would defenitely be up for a meeting.  I would think off-season, fall or winter would be best.

Hi everyone, since my move I did not train in this area and as a result i have not done any tri's this season. Yes it is an excuse, partially, but who wants to train alone. I would assist in organizing a group. Although Landry's is located in Shrewsbury and considered the Worcester area, it's a bit far for me as I am outside of Worcester. I'm sure others would agree also.

Therefore, I think its a great idea to consider latching onto a thriving club like Landry's Tri Team and it could be called Landry's Tri Team~Worcester Location. Again, I will gladly assist in working with others on this rewarding endeavour.

Does anyone know if Landry's in Shrewsbury has a tri team?  That is pretty close to where I live.  I not looking for a hardcore IM training group, just a group of beginner/average triathletes to train for sprint/olympic and maybe a half IM.  Cool

Is Landry's in Shrews or Westborough? I was planning on stopping in tomorrow if I go I will ask. M.Millar, what is your schedule like? I joined the facebook site as well. I work 2 shift and have 2 boys so my time isn't much but I can do something for a couple hours most mornings except wed mornings.

Landrys  is on Rt 9 in Westborough. Alison is the manager and she will be able to give you the info on the Landrys rides.

I stopped in Landry's and they were very busy so I didn't ask about the tri team. Mark, I answered your pm.

Landrys does have a tri team out of the Westboro Store. The workouts are posted on Meet Up. It's a loose "join the workouts if you want" team but a great group of people.

I also run a training group and tri team out of the boroughs. You can view some posts, etc... at www.FitBricks.com

I just complete the TDD Triathlon today and this being only my second triathlon would also like to train with a group from the Worcester area. I live in Worcester and typically train out of the YMCA Greendale in the mornings.

I'd be willing to help call around for sponsors.

I'm in the same Boat, wishing there was a worc team.. training at the ymca greendale as well.

just did the TDD myself! How'd it go Matt? thought the run was a little longer than 3 miles, but overall thought it was great

..for such a large city, you would think that there would be a team!
