Do you breathe with your mouth open or closed when running? Why?

While out running yesterday, I realized that I always breathe with my mouth open. I live in Maine, where it can be cold and I know that it is easier on your lungs to breathe through your nose (to warm the air before it hits your lungs)...are there any other (compelling) reasons to breathe through your nose?

I have never thought about it.
 Dang.
Now I bet I won't be able to think about anything else when I am running.

Mouth open.  I will occasionally force myself to do some deep breathing through my nose since it helps me relax during a run, but I can't breath through my nose for long.  In the cold my nose is a faucet, so that might be part of the problem.  I'll let you know in July when I'm not brushing ice off my face half my runs!

Everything I've read has always said to breathe through your mouth because you can get a greater exchange of air that way. When I run in the cold (and I've done runs in single digit temps) I wear a balaclava or pull my neck warmer up over my mouth a bit.

Mouth always opened and relaxed while running.  I would be impossible for me to get enough air to hold my pace.  I have ran in -20+ plenty of times now and never had any cold air issues while breathing.

If you run with your mouth open you will still be taking in some air through your nose. The reason to run with your mouth open is it relaxes the face and relieves tension, but the main thing is you are taking in much more oxygen with your mouth open.

I always have my mouth open to breath when exercising unless it's an easy warm up pace.  The only way I can keep up with a steady breathing cadence.  My left nostril is of no use from years of boxing and the right doesn't supply near enough air on it's own.Foot in mouth

Phew! This is good news to me. I must be really relaxed when I run. Thanks for the feedback folks.

Same here.  IMHO opinion, if you can run with your mouth closed, you aren't running - at most you are speed walking.  It is just not possible to get enough O2 in through your nose if you are doing any type of strenuous exercise, let alone being able to exhale quickly and forcefully enough to get rid of CO2

In general it is better to inhale through the nose and exhale out the mouth. This was really emphasized in a karate club I participated in years ago. Helps on concentration and the nose filters out more junk.

However I have to do the complete opposite in the pool. Trying to inhale through my nose is a disaster in the pool, even if timed right there is always water coming in with the air. Ouch, that burns!

I hate running and am no good at it yet. I HAVE TO breathe through my mouth. There is no way I can get enough air in and out through my nose. (Not to mention the stuff that is already trying to exit my nose at any given moment when under exertion.)

Even if I could nose breathe when running, all the time in the pool would leave me inclined to breathe through my mouth anyway.

The only benefit of breathing through your nose while running that I can think is that your nose hairs prevent very large contaminants from entering your lungs.  Thankfully very few of us have to deal with this!

I've been doing some of my slower runs breathing only thru my nose, it was hard for first 2 times then I adjusted. Once you get the hang of it you naturally run at slow easy pace and I find relaxing as it makes you breath slower and deeper.

Its worth a try to get used to this as a change up in your running routine.
