Subject: Numbness in finger while biking
The last few times I have gone biking I have had numbness in the tip of my left pinky. It got worse the day I did my longest ride (9 miles - I know, not much to all of you! ) This morning I tried to do my first mini-brick. As soon as I started riding my finger felt the same. It feels better when I hold my hand vertically, but since I have a mt. bike so that is not easy/confortable - I end up sort of half gripping the end of the bar. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this or if there is something I can do to fix it? Thank you!!

Amy

Pressure on your hands can make your fingers go numb.  Try biking gloves, prefereably padded ones.  I can ride my road bike (padded tape) 50+ miles and be fine, but 10 miles on my MTB and my hands are dead without gloves...

Thank you, I will try that. Just one more thing to put on my "to buy" list for this new hobby!

Also make sure your seat and/or handlebars are at the right spot.  Last year I was riding a hybrid and the first few times out, I had some numb fingers too.  Turns out, I was leaning too had on the handlebars, so a little upward adjustment and I was fine.

These are very good suggestions. It will probably get better with more riding, but also remember to adjust your hand position occasionally and many people starting out grip the handles too tightly.  Take a little pressure off your hands and ride with a looser grip.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again. I do try to remember loosen my hands and wiggle my fingers every so often. I am so clueless about my bike - I raised my seat WAY up from where I had it (a nice person on the bike path told me I had it too low), but I never thought to raise the handlebars. I'll try that tomorrow, I am hoping to go 10-11 miles if it doesn't rain.

This happend to me alot on long rides. I bought gloves and that helped a bit. I also experimented with moving my seat back and that pretty much did the trick. Adjust you seat and handle bars differently to try to put less weight on your hands. Also, switch positions while riding.

My right index finger goes numb. It will last a few hours after i ride too. I don't wear gloves though so I'm guessing that is the problem. It's more of a mental thing for me. I usually just block it out. Most of the time my groin is hurting more than my finger. So I'm usually not thinking about the finger...hahahaa
