Subject: training for half marathon - question regarding shorter runs
So, I've got 9 or so weeks until my first half mary, and I'm following one of the common training programs that can be found on the 'net. It's pretty standard - 2 or 3 shorter runs during the week, and a longer run on the weekend.

Regarding the shorter runs - should they be at the same pace as the longer runs, or should one or two during the week be done at a quicker pace?

Thanks.

The plans I've seen usually spell out the pace used for various runs. Maybe there is more of an explanation at the site where you got this particular plan.

Yeah, for whatever reason, pace is not mentioned in the plan. It does call for running a 5K and a 10K at race pace, but no mention of how fast to run the weekly shorties.

I would keep it mixed up. Use some of the shorter runs as recovery runs and some of them as speed work and some of them at race pace. How many shorter runs do you do per week?

The plan calls for 3 shorter runs during the week, although cross training can be substituted for one of them, and I likely will. So, 2 short runs per week.

Not sure of your running pedigree or history, but I assume you are relatively new.  See from your log this week that you can run btwn 5-10k, at a pace of 5'10" per km...Obviously you already have some fitness.

As preached in several other recent threads, I would just run & run often...  I would not worry about pace that much, but try & get all of your runs in.  The Long run, tends to be  little slower, to build endurance.

If you want to run fast, would probably do one per week.  Tend to build it into the run that was planned, either with fartlek, or some such.  I would consider this optional & not essential.

Just run the mileage required & you should be good to go.

JMHO...

i agree with this.  with my half mary training, i use one of my shorter runs early in the week as a recovery run after my long run.  for another shorter run i do speed work.  works fine for me.

I would not cut runs from a training plan for a half marathon - you need run fitness and the only way to get that is by running.

As far as paces, I would take a recent run race, plug it into Daniels's VDot calculator (http://www.runbayou.com/jackd.htm) and find training paces.  Most of your weekly running should be around E pace and, assuming decent run fitness, probably a T run as well.

Agree with the above, and add that the short runs are generally used as a recovery mechanism, so they should all be at an easier effort. If you want to do a moderate effort, I would do it during one of the longer runs.
